If you had the choice, which would you choose?

a. Having Jordy Nelson and Suh on your team.

b. Having Megatron on your team.

The Lions are likely to lose Suh in free agency, in part because Megatron's cap hits are:
$20.558 million in 2015 and $24.088 million in 2016

If the Lions had Jordy Nelson and his 9.7M average salary, they could probably afford to keep Suh.

I am confused where Dez comes in? It sounds like you are asking from the perspective of a Lions fan?

Thank You

I'd pay Dez very well, but not crazy money.

Of course the correct answer is Nelson (who isn't much less of a WR than MTron) and Suh.

Speaking for myself, I'd probably take Suh straight up over MTron, because a dominating DL does wonders for the whole defense... and I've always loved defense.

Dez though, means a lot to this team... beyond just what his numbers might say.

Dez is going to stay in Dallas one way or another, but I do get your point.

Suh and Nelson all day long. Love Dez and his passion but Nelson has outperformed him this season (so far) and Suh compared to any D-lineman on this team is a "no comparison" deal.

Edit: I know this is about Detroit, but my answer stays the same. Megatron isn't worth two of the most productive players in the league at their positions (Neither is Dez).

The Dez contract discussion has generally come down to how much is he worth to the team. The Megatron/Suh issue is an example of what how overpaying Dez could come back to bite the Cowboys in the butt. It's just a hypothetical question because obviously the Cowboys don't have the option to pay Jordy Nelson 9.7M instead of paying Dez significantly more.

ah, thank you. I wasn't sure if I was missing something.

I believe that Cutler-lite (Stafford) would miss megatron. Jordy is good...but he benefits from single coverage a ton...and having aaron Rodgers as his qb. I think if the Lions could get some players in the secondary they could afford to lose Suh because of Fairley and Ziggy.

The Lions got hurt by the OLD rookie deals for Stafford, Suh and Megatron. They started off a very high levels and never came down. Their hand was forced with the Megatron contract and really wasn't a market value issue. His contract should not be the benchmark for WRs.

Dez should be in the 10-12m range, not the 15-16m range

But I would rather have Nelson and Suh vs Megatron. Look at what Golden Tate produced when Calvin was out.

WRs are easier to find than DTs. Look at Watkins, OBJ, MBryant, MEvans, BCooks, John Brown, Allen Robinson and Jordan Matthews.

You take the two productive players over one.

Though it's hard to quantify Dez' impact in the locker room. I don't know how important that is for sure, but getting rid of probably the ONLY young guy who is clearly in position to be he heart and soul of the team doesn't seem smart.

This team has often been talented enough, but lacked fire. Granted, I don't truly know how much of an impact Dez makes in that area, but if it's as much as the local media says, I don't think you can lose a guy like that.

Suh and Nelson hands down.

Also, I'd rather (hypothetically) have a Victor Cruz and a Eric Decker type duo rather than one Dez Bryant.

A lot more could be had with the $$ that Dez wants.

Jordy Nelson is a product of the system and Aaron Rogers. But they might be able to deal with it since Tate isn't too bad up there in Detroit.

For argument sake....I franchise DEZ...he don't workout a team friendly deal...them work a deal to trade him...look for a RG3 or Hershel Walker type deal...two 1st maybe or a 1st and 2nd pick...then go draft Amari Cooper from Alabama....and sign less expensive WR in FA.

Love DEZ....but just don't care to pay a WR 13-15 Million a year long term.....

But to answer your question, I will take a Jordy Nelson and SUH all day everyday.

Yes, the Franchise Tag makes the Dez contract a non-issue for 2015. He'll be here one way or the other.

In regards to trading him, other teams will not give up significant draft picks for a guy that also requires a huge contract. With the current CBA, teams just aren't going to give up both huge cap space AND draft picks for the same player.

This is disingenuous. Calvin Johnson's aav is $16m and the reason there are those cap his is due to backloading the deal obnoxiously. The moral here is to not backload players you want to keep long term. I'm also wondering where our all pro dl whose contract is up in 3 years assuming we do backload. Crawford?

If Nelson ' s contract was up after this season he wouldn't be cheap either so I don't really see your point

He just signed a new contract in July that averages about 9.7M per season.

3/13/2012: Signed an eight-year, $150.5 million contract. The deal contains $60 million guaranteed.

150.5 / 8 = 18.8125 (average)

It's a hypothetical question. I'm not comparing any DL on the Cowboys to Suh. It's just and example of how overpaying one player can affect a team. It's also an example of why having the #1 ranked player at a position is not always that much better than having one that just ranking in the top 10.

Good for them that they got that deal done before this season or the price would have been higher

dont think Dallas overpays. IMO i think they want to go with whats working now. The run. I dont think they will low ball DEz but it would suprise me if he gets over 13mil a yr. Alot of guaranteed money in the base salry could save Dallas capwise. Restructures are theyre best friend.
