How do I clean the inside? I've been scraping the crap out of it with this three-piece tool. Getting all that hard resin. Is it more of a light scrape?
Since I'm new to this, should I stick to a single pipe now while I learn to smoke? I'm actually having a pipe right now
Thanks, so much, Fritsch.
Cup O' Joes, a brick and mortar out of NY sells both of these pipe styles.Brother in law smokes briars, and has a couple of meerschaums in his collection. I've stopped at cigars, since pipes are a lot less healthy, but they're damn cool, though. And smell great.
Are you saying "elementary" a lot in a sentence???Scotte brand, curved oak with ebony mouthpiece. Very fine tobacco. Law IQ as vouched for/recommended by a friend who has been smoking (this brand tobacco) for some time. Very mellow and very delightful.
Anyone else smoke a pipe? I'm not using, either, bowl or stem filters. Just straight smoking. A pure, robust draw as it would be a cigar, albeit not quite as strong. Zero filters.
I did some research this afternoon on some well-populated pipe message boards; this subject seems divided amongst pipe smokers. Hence my wanting feedback.
I want to venture out into other pipe tobaccos. Any suggestions? Also, lighters? Zippo? Bic? Match? I've read from enthusiasts advocating all. What do you use?
I was smoking cigars, but at $50-60/day, it just got too expensive. (Someone start a cigar thread, I have a lot of feedback, LOL )
Please, keep weed and such out of this thread, this is a legit pipe tobacco thread for novices.
Danke

Are you wearing tweeds with the little casing-liner suede elbow patchs? Buying but not reading
Leather bound books?
And admiring your trusty Webley .44 bulldog pug revolver, that's faithfully served you so very well in the days of old?
Indeed!,,, I figure the Troutster would cut a rather dapper fashion statement in a slate grey mediumAnd let's not forget the spats...wouldn't be right without those!?!

Yes. But it doesn't correlate to tongue bite (what I call "fire tongue"). You want to soak your bowl in a fine dark rum for about a day (24 hrs). You can use water, too.Beware the fire tongue! LOL.
Have you done any research to see if there is a way to break a new one in other than smoking it? Not something I've ever had to do, both of mine are "estate pipes'.
As an aside, I've read that estate pipes are for more advanced smokers. Just because of the prep it takes to break them back in and removal of old tastes.
Awesome stuff, Fritsch! Thanks for the great feedback.Meh, I wouldn't let that intimidate me. Look it up on-line, it's not that complicated unless you want to re-finish the outside. I wasn't concerned with looks on mine, but one is sterling silver clad, so all I needed to do was polish it up a bit, and the other was very lightly used and in good shape.
They have tools called bowl reamers, that seemed a bit extreme to me since they basically take the bowl down to new wood. Didn't see the need for that myself. After giving the bowl a good scraping with my pipe cleaning tool I used some wet/dry sandpaper inside the bowl to get rid of old residue. Worked it and the stem over with pipe cleaners dipped in good vodka to clean the old buildup inside them. Most places recommend using Everclear, but I saw a suggestion to never use crappy liquor to clean your pipe, use the good stuff, which made sense. The stem on the silverclad had some teeth marks. I used the wet/dry paper on it. Didn't worry about removing all of the marks, just wanted to make sure someone else's mouth gunk wasn't on there.
Pretty simple really so I'd say don't be afraid to buy a used estate pipe if you find one at a yard sell or something. The amount of cleaning however will depend on how much the pipe was used and what shape it's in. You can also buy estate pipes on-line that have already been professionally refurbished, they can be pricey though. I'm a cheapskate myself. My silverclad I bought in a $2 box lot at an auction and the other one I found in my deceased uncles stuff when I was helping my aunt move stuff. Neither were expensive pipes anyway. One is an old Medico and the other is a Yorkshire Royal. They smoke just fine for my money.
LOL! You're gonna get Waldo all hot and bothered talking like thatAnybody that would suck on a pipe...would suck on anything....

Hey bud, how often do you smoke your pipes? I'm up to about three bowls a day, now.
