Kevin Ogletree preps for the NFL Draft
Tuesday, March 3rd 2009
With little fanfare,
Kevin Ogletree announced in early January that he was leaving the
University of Virginia to enter the NFL Draft.
Despite finishing with 723 receiving yards - second in the ACC - in his first season back from a torn left ACL, the 6-2, 189-pounder was overshadowed by
Texas Tech star
Michael Crabtree,
Florida speedster
Percy Harvin and other more ballyhooed wideouts.
But things are changing. The former Holy Cross HS standout, the Daily News Player of the Year in 2004-05,
says an NFL advisory board pegged him as a third- or fourth-round pick - and his stock could be rising. During the NFL Scouting Combine two weeks ago, Ogletree clocked a
4.48-second 40-yard dash, nearly as fast as Harvin (4.41), a likely first-rounder.
Not that Ogletree is ready to rest. Here, he talks about his Combine performance, and thinks ahead to his next big workout,
Virginia's Pro Day on March 18:
"I showed I'm fast and I can get down the field at the Combine. I really did my thing. I think I helped myself out (at the Combine). I ran well. I was running clean routes. That's what they're looking for.
"But a lot of people don't realize that it's all part of a process. The draft is something scouts work on all year long. They have a pretty good idea of what they want before; the Combine just helps the opinion of what they already know.
"I've shown them stuff already, so now I'm in a new phase. I was training a lot for track stuff and the 40. Now, I'm working on running routes, catching balls, and lifting lots of weights.
"Even (with) that, I'm not worried too much. Teams know I have ability."
