Key rebuilding question: What is our identity?

As I watched the Steelers when we played them 8 days ago, I was taken by how clearly they know what they want to be as a team and an organization. They have one of the clearest identities in pro sports. They have run the 3-4 defense for multiple decades. They have had 3 head coaches in 51 years.

Their GM Kevin Colbert is starting his 21st season with the team and just received a contract extension. The Rooney family have consistently been committed to hiring good people to run their organization, while setting clear goals, then letting their people do their jobs. They are perhaps the most stable professional sports organization out there, and have 6 rings to show for it.

I’m not here to praise the Steelers. I’m actually just wondering these key questions regarding our Dallas Cowboys and how this team can effectively get better and build a winner again:
  • What kind of team are we trying to be? (A 4-3 speed/finesse type D, with a power running game? Or a pass oriented offense built around the QB?- just two examples)
  • What kind of players do we need to add that fits that vision of what we want to become as a team?
I’m of the opinion that the biggest problem this team has in putting a championship roster together (besides having Jerry Jones running it) is this:
  • The leaders of this organization don’t know what they’re trying to build. They don’t seem to have a clear vision of the team’s identity.
  • The Jones FO builds their roster like a fantasy football team- just add talent regardless of whether or not that talent fits your identity.
For everyone screaming for the “tank”- sure having a top 5 pick position in the draft is great. But if you don’t know what your identity is as a team, how can you select the right talent?

My question to my fellow fans is this- what is this team’s identity?

Soft, that's our identity, as long as Jerry prefers to be comfortable we will remain soft. Successful organizations keep the BS to a minimum. We had that with Jimmy, but that made Jerry uncomfortable. So here we are, and here we will remain until Jerry gets out of his own way.

Stop blaming the owner for everything. He's not nearly as involved as you think.

We built this team to be an offensive powerhouse with a defense that could keep teams scoring below what we could. There were some issues with this though. That being we weren't scoring many points against good teams with the game in reach. Also, the defense was beyond atrocious. I can give the D a bit of slack. It's a new system, several new players, and a messed up off-season to learn how to play together. That being said, there needs to be a lot of people cleared out of there this off-season and some fresh talent brought in, especially at Safety. If we can beef up the defense, and we can stay healthy on the line next year, I see good things whether with Dak or some one else.

They have no idea. Jerry's biggest problem. He just randomly brings in coaches, players with no regard for a set path or identity. Lets Marinelli pick who he wants, Garrett get who he wants, yada yada yada. NO regard for what type of team we are.

It was obvious two years ago that Dak was becoming the main focus of this team. Then the moron signs Zeke to a big extension. Now the team is stuck trying to hold onto the Zeke identity when they should be moving full steam forward with Dak at the focus of the offense.

this speaks of a team with no GM....no GM means no accountablity, this leads to way to many cooks in the kitchen and no plan...to be honest im suprised our roster is as good as it is. A real GM could take this team and add some good players to it and be very competitive, we can only hope that is the idea with MM, I'm willing to give him a pass this year for obvious reason and see what he does the rest of this season and the offseason to mold this into what he has in mind.

Does a team need an identity. Winning creates an identity for fans and the media.
If you have a strong defense, you have a defensive identity, same goes for offense. You rarely see a team having both anymore. But yt they need t go hand in hand in a way.

I do not think a teams sets out and says, this is what we want our team to be other than winning. They just try to get the best 53 they can.
Emphasis has been strong offense here as the defense been neglected for years. Maybe that changes soon.

No one ever says, their team is down for ST's. LOL. Anyway, I do not really care other than an identity of playing well in all 3 phases and winning. Like the 90's teams. I don't think they had an identity of defense or offense. Maybe a bit more on offense as they were efficient, but they also complimented each other. Like Landry's teams.

A winning identity is what is needed. This team needs to learn how to win games, like that Eagles game, or the Steelers game, even the Washington game.

The real Dallas Cowboys are long gone. They have been replaced by the Arlington Jonesboys that have no identity except Jerry Dumbo GM Jones.

To a billionaire that is owner, GM, and defacto Head Coach, it is fantasy football.

What Dallas Cowboys football was, it is no more and has not been Dallas Cowboys football since 1996 when the remnants of it finally past away.

As long as the Jerry Jones is owner, GM, and defacto Head Coach you will continue to see the Arlington Jonesboys line up on the football field and totally remind you that you are not watching the Dallas Cowboys Football franchise. The Dallas Cowboys have gone away like the Houston Oilers.

All Dallas Cowboys fans have is nostalgia.

Our identity is Dak and being a passing powerhouse.

Unfortunately that went out the window with Dak’s injury, as our QB’s not named Dak remain winless.

We're a team built to run the ball that avoids running the ball.

the problem with that to me would be we drafted Lamb....not saying that was not the correct pick, I'm saying if we are a running team then with what we had on the roster we should've traded down collected picks and fill some defensive holes. I do think if san fran doesn't take that DT 2 picks before us we probably wouldve drafted him and that would have made sense to a power running team. We have been trying to be a power run team with mediocre defenses....that usually will get you in trouble in the playoffs, as it has done.

I will say it. Cee Dee Lamb was the wrong pick when your defense could not stop the Eagles offensive roster made of 2nd, 3rd team, and practice squad players.

That draft pick was classic Jerry Dumbo GM Jones decision making.

The identity of this franchise is all about marketing and promotion and making sure it's still the ratings and revenue champ. As long as that identity rules, no other is necessary because nothing different is demanded.

The franchise is more splash than substance and while splash favors the franchise, the lack of substance hinders the team.

As long as the owner gets the message that success is neither expected or the lack of punished, nothing changes and no identity is necessary.

You ask what is the identity? The owner answers back "profits and value".

Part of the obvious problem with this FO is clear- even with our answers here on this thread as fans- what are we? A power running team? A varied pass attack? Are we running a 4-3? A 3-4? 4-2-5?

Whenever things open up in society again, Cowboys fans will once again have the opportunity to send a message to Jerral Wayne. I have no confidence that will happen. But the opportunity will be there.

We know our owner is a football fool. He is a business genius but a football fool. But what makes him twice as bad is he is the worst kind of fool- a rich one. He can continue his foolishness as long as he is surrounded by fawning sycophants and our fan base continues to drink his kool aid.

On DEF we should be copying what the Giants are doing, mixing up fronts etc. We mustn't be one dimensional.

If you look what the Rams are doing they are having a lot of success with a 3-4 that mixes in 4-3 looks and 3-3-5 on nickel.

Let's learn from other teams who are successful

And therein lies the identity.
