The more I learn about this iteration of the Cowboys the more I am convinced that the defensive line and the defensive backs as presently constituted can at least be passable in terms of team functionality. The one player that may make or break this season for the defense may be Barham.

If he plays at a fairly high level (with his level of size and athleticism) this defense might be on the cusp of being elite. If he were to get injured or fail to materialize into a legitimate player, I think this defense will struggle to be cohesive.

It seems a bit crazy to think that a guy who wasn’t really on our radar as a 3rd round pick might be the difference maker on this defense. I’m not saying he is the best player but it would seem that we can adapt at other positions better than we can at his linebacker spot (and maybe also as a pass rusher).

He is the type of backer we have needed for years. Plus size, physical with instincts to boot.
