According to Harvey Fiaklov of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Cowboys free agent S Keith Davis has come to terms with the Miami Dolphins.

Along with the myriad of coaches and personnel staff that Tuna has shuttled from Valley Ranch to Miami with him are former Cowboys Jason Ferguson, Sean Ryan, Joey Thomas, Trey Darilek, Junior Glymph and Matt Baker. And this is the M.O. of the Parcells/Belichick/Crennel coaching tree -- Get players who have played for you to be tone-setters in your new locale.

Davis, a blood-and-guts player, fits that bill to a 'T'. In addition to being a special teams ace, he's likely to compete with Yeremiah Bell for a starting spot alongside 2007 first-round pick Jason Allen at safety.

Here, he was behind the likes of Roy Williams, Ken Hamlin and Patrick Watkins at the position. So this is the type of move that makes a lot of sense for both Miami and Davis.

There is a complicated formula but all you really need to know is that you get compensatory draft picks if you don't sign new free agents and other teams sign yours.

The better those players perform, the better your picks. So cheer like crazy for JuJo and Jacques Reeves and all the rest.

I don't proclaim to know the formula used, and neither does Adam, but I think it is more heavily weighted on salary and playing time(Games started) than how many yards they get or interceptions. That may contribute for them going to the Pro Bowl, which would impact slightly the value of the comp pick, but I don't think any of the players has a realistic chance of that happening.

If Adam's salary range valuation is fairly accurate(and I think most of us here believe it is), then here is what we would be estimated to receive based solely on average salary:

Julius Jones: 4 yr/$12 million - $3 mill avg or borderline 5th/6th round pick
Jacques Reeves: 5 yr/$20 million - $4 mil avg or 5th round pick
Keith Davis: 2 yr/$3.5 million - $1.75 mil avg or borderline 6th/7th round pick

Other UFA not signed yet:
Tyson Thompson
Nate Jones

Does this save us any cap space aside from his base salary? And what was his base salary anyway?

Good luck, KD...purchase that flak jacket!!

It's just funny. Killa had six years -- six years! -- to win a starting safety job here and he proved over and over that he never was a solution, even in the years when we desperately needed a safety next to RW. But he's suddenly going to show that kind of ability now that he's almost 30? Ridiculous.

I would never dare question Adam when it comes to comp picks. That's one of those things that someone tried to explain to me once and I stopped them after 10 minutes because I decided it would never be that important.

But it is my understanding that playing time is a factor as well as productivity so it doesn't seem like you could estimate their value yet. But again, I don't know. I'll just cheer for them to do well just in case.

Damn....killa got pennies.

That's less than we paid him last contract, isn't it?

I'm glad Davis signed with the Dolphins and the rest of the unrestricted guys also found other places to play, because the only way the draft picks make the team is for these guys to walk to open up roster spots

This is one of the worst drafts for safeties in years, esp SS. Anyone care to guess on our plan to back up Roy? Courtney Brown, Watkins - I wouldn't think so.

I don't know "why not" to Brown or Watkins.

Both have much more physical talent than Davis every dreamed of having.

And Watkins has at least made plays.

Hell any safety off the streets can take the shatty angles on plays that Davis did.
