Following the week of Senior Bowl practices, there have been some changes to my first-round projection for the 2006 NFL draft. There are 14 underclassmen in this week's projected first round, three fewer than last week.

The top-six picks remain the same, but the one newcomer to the top 10 is Texas defensive back Michael Huff. Right now I have him projected to land in San Francisco, which has the seventh overall pick. What I like about Huff is his versatility because he can player either cornerback or safety.

This projected pick reminds me of what the 49ers did in 1981 in a similar situation. In the '81 draft, the 49ers had the eighth overall pick and selected another versatile defensive back, USC's Ronnie Lott.

I will submit another first-round projection following the NFL Combine, which is Feb. 22-28 in Indianapolis.

1. Houston Reggie Bush, RB* USC
2. New Orleans Matt Leinart, QB USC

Why, thats what we need!

I think 5 years down the road, you'll be cheering for Mcneil as he protects our QB (whoever that may be in 5 years) in the superbowl.

Moss we could possibly get in the 2nd round. (I wouldn't mind that at all)
None of the FA Free Safeties would do us any better than Michael Huff, Jimmy Williams, or Ko Simpson... PLUS, we wouldn't be bothered with a heavy salary cap hit for at least a couple or 3 years if we drafted a FS rather than bringing in a FA.
A rookie tackle wouldn't be an immediate impact in my opinion.. other than QB, offensive line is probably the hardest position to make the transition from college to NFL. We'd still be dealing with Rob Petitti type deficiencies for at least a year or 2 while our rookie tackle was learning to play against the speed/skills of NFL DE's and OLB's.

I'm all for getting offensive linemen in this draft.. but not with the first round pick.

Just my opinions.

5 years? This team is on the verge of making a super bowl run next season or the year after.

Give me immediate impact players.. I don't want to wait 5 frickin years.

Worthless. He'll change his mind a billion times between now and the draft.

We have atleast 2 spots on the OL which need to be shored up in 2006, RT and Center (in that order).

I think we have to address atleast one of these concerns in FA. I'm more inclined to get a RT as this is our biggest area of need on the OL, plus it is a difficult position for a rookie to play. Also, I think there are a couple possible guys who should be available in FA at RT.

Kicker and FS are the two other positions I think we shore up in FA.

The only glaring holes remaining are at OLB, improvement at Center, one more WR to develop, and 1 big NT to complement Fergy.

I think we probably go LB high in the draft, along with possibly WR (first day). That leaves us trying to find a big NT and maybe a Center.

Mocks make more sense after the combine and free agency period.

Chris Hope or Dex Jackson or Chavous would be fine by me (in that order). There should be some guys available in FA who can help us at that spot.
