If they go into the draft they should have a must, a need and a wish list. They should spend their picks on who is available when it is their time. Same thing with trades. Desperate trades often fail.

Must: S
Need: S, CB, cover LB, pass rusher, 3, swing tackle
Wish: QB, RB, WR, defense

Looks like Kurt may have taken one too many shots in his playing days and got his Cassel scouting report mixed up with Dan Fouts. That's pretty much the opposite of what Cassel brings to the table. Well, the interceptions when he tries to do too much is accurate though.

To be fair to Matt, he hasn't really played much over the last two years so he may be a bit different now. All we really have to go on that's immediate is this year in the preseason/training camp with the Bills, where reports such as this surfaced:

"Matt Cassel again did exactly what Matt Cassel always does. He threw safe, short passes and did nothing to distinguish himself."

But hey, let's go deep to Devin and Lucky!

I'll take the word of a future Hall of Fame quarterback.

Shouldn't you be in the Weeden thread, kicking him while he's down? Or maybe you're there too, when you post 150 posts a day you've got to get coverage.

More preseason impressions from Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News on Matt "the Mad Bomber" Cassel:

"No, Cassel didn't stretch the field, dinking and dunking his way through his brief showing just as he did in the only other preseason game he played, the opener against Carolina. However, once again he did what a quarterback on a team that intends to win games with defense and a running game needs to do. He made safe throws and avoided mistakes."

Man, this Cassel guy is gonna fit right in. No wonder Garrett wanted him in here.

it still depends on whether the WRs can get open. Cassel may be willing to take those shots, but if coverage is tight, it'll be interesting to see what he does

Pats picked Garappolo before the Cowboys were on the clock and I distinctly remember seeing the War Room look deflated when he was picked. I think they liked him.

Maybe Brady stays a Patriot long enough where garapolo doesnt make it to his second contract with them and we can sign him then.
I wanted Garapolo as well.
If Romo came from eastern illinois and made it this far, whos to say Garapolo cant either.

Kicking him while he's down? Lol He is still on the team and his salary I believe is guaranteed, I wish I was down like that.

We may not agree on much but I will give you that he didn't shine in the pre-season. I noticed the dinks and dunks too but it wasn't a large body of work. One thing I did notice prior to that was his willingness to go down field which was sometimes reckless but he was also a leader and I'm hoping the team responds accordingly. I don't think we're getting a perfect QB. Far from it. But we couldn't go with Weeden any longer the way he was playing. I'll take my chances with Cassel rather than repeating with Weeden.

Small sample size. Dinking and dunking isn't necessarily a bad thing as we saw with Brees when he lit us up in Week 4. As long as you're not doing it as first resort and not even going through all your reads and progressions like Weeden fails to so many times.

There's nothing wrong with dinking and dunking. Brees has made a career of doing that. It's the ability to take shots down the field and that's something Cassel has shown he can do. Weeden has also shown he cannot do that. Simple logic.

I think Cassel is more of a leader than Weeden and the team (ie: OL) will respond. I really do. I also think the D responds as well because they have to feel that even if they make a stop, Weeden was just going to dink and dunk his way to another 3 and out. It was an impossible task for the D, as well as the OL. We may not win, but I think we'll play better and at least give ourselves a shot.

if the line can give him time most qbs can find open receiver it will take the rest of the team playing well also get takaways on defense but if we stay with weeddone we wont win another game until romo comes back so its that or cassell I have seen all I need to see of weeden so my hope is cassell and the team responds and we win some

Wide open is fine but you have to make plays on third down esp if you trying to march down the field and win the game. You ARE going to find yourself throwing into tight windows at times or you are going to run or dump the ball off. I vote for door number 1.

QBs who make it this far have at least an arm big enough to make all the throws. The difference is primarily making your reads and progressions then being able to deliver the ball accurately at times into a tight window. If they have a cannon then so much the better.

True
I think Weeden is just too slow with his reads and doesn't anticipate a guy coming open
Romo is so good at anticipating a guy coming open and has even got better at it the last few years

My issue with Weeden is and has been that he is a one read QB. He locks on to the 1st read and then if not there checks down or panics. Just my humble opinion from watching All 22 and old film of him. Maybe it is a lack of game time experience or maybe he just isn't very good. I don't know which one.

Hopefully, due to more experience, Cassel will go thru his progressions and hit the open man. Cassel has his warts too and will not be confused with Romo or any upper echelon QB, but he hopefully can be Kitna plus (which is my version of better than Kitna lite)...able to make plays when necessary, pseudo smart with the ball and can command a huddle.

I'm not sure how much better he'll be, but the mental boost I think is significant. Weeden couldn't lead a pickup game.

Matt Cassel with the Patriots

Man if he can somehow rekindle this kind of performance with us, we could easily be sitting at .500 or better by the time Romo comes back.
