La'el Collins excited for first NFL game

Injury creates opportunities. This is Collins' opportunity. I've said all along that Collins' primary deficit, in my opinion, is his unfamiliarity with the speed of the professional level. I hope he's ready for it. If he is, the offensive line will become that much better, especially in the interior line where it has already excelled with Leary.

I would rather take a chance on a guy who might be able to beat him Vs. a guy Cox would likely beat like a drum consistently in Benrie.

Yup, especially in the run game. Pass blocking requires more technique and positioning. Run blocking? See that fella in front of you, La'el? Move him. LOL.

At least Collins matches up with Cox physically. I have never been a fan or believer of Berny.

Some of you make Cox out to be JJ Watt when it comes to pass rushing. He's good, but he's not THAT good. I'm sure there will be times either Collins or Bernie will be beat, but I doubt it will be enough to change the outcome of the game. My worry is still Romo and the entire line picking up blitzes, which they struggled with last year.

Leary struggled mightily with Cox last year. Collins isn't as good. I just don't see Collins winning that battle and I would think that it's going to take some quality teamwork to keep Cox controlled. Seems Bernie is better suited for that as he's had more experience with the rest of the line.

Leary knock on him is that he doesn't anchor that well to hold off on the point of attack against power rushers. He also had problems anchoring against Suh last year also.

However, Collins can. He has the power and the athletic ability to neutralize Cox.

Collins was projected to be a top 20 pick and was rated as the top guard in some media outlets.

I believe that he is the best person for the job over Bernie despite his inexperience playing at the guard position for the Cowboys.

I hope they give 71 the start but wouldn't be surprised if they platoon the two. Similar to what they did with Free and Parnell, I can see Collins and Mack B alternating. Not sure how that will work in terms of continuity but...

He might be, and if the coaches decide that he is I'm certainly not knowledgeable enough to argue against it. I'll be a little nervous if his first action comes against Cox, but if that's what they decide I'm sure it's the best option.

Coach Jerry on his phone interview on the Fan this morning strongly implied Leary should be able to go Sunday, and said he didn't really need to come out last week. We'll see.

Bernie is the backup at 3 spots. I'm sure the team would prefer him to keep that role and not have to play musical chairs if someone else was to get nicked up during the game.

Agreed. I think you keep Berny on the bench so that he stays healthy throughout the game in case (knock on wood) Fred has to come out. Would be a minor disaster if you started Berny at LG, he gets hurt, and we have no "swing" interior lineman. Then what? Alot of musical chairs and that is not good.

Collins would do better than Leary, and certainly Berny, at anchoring against Cox. He's just stronger than both. The only worry is pass blocking with stunts and interior blitzes.
