La'el Collins update

And I think you're grossly overestimating the impact of one year either way. All of the other linemen who got paid huge money did so because they were proven, over multiple years. No matter how well either Collins or Cooper play this year, it will still be their first year of consistant, high-quality play. Nobody isn't going to pay them close to what the Pro Bowl talents get based off of that one year.

They currently have "cheap labor", two-fifths of their offensive line is "cheap labor".

And for the record, plenty of people are talking about a huge money contract for Elliott, despite the fact that he's still under contract for four more years and even then, there's no guarantee that they will ultimately decide to pay him or replace him when that time comes.

Well I'm assuming Collins is restricted next season (thats still kinda up in the air even in this thread), but we could look to extend him then of course. Problem is, if we don't or refuses the extension, thats actually 2 years, not 1 year of proven play. We are going into Martin's 3rd year and already talking extension.

Cheap labor now means nothing in 2 years. Resigning Collins means we just have one, and if we paid Cooper at that time alot, it would be none. Be smarter to draft a guard than pay Cooper, or for that matter Leary.

I'm skeptical on this. I would be surprised if the NFL would approve a deal that clearly circumvents the CBA.

I expect the reporter is confused - Collins is eligible to re-sign (hey Zoners, note how you spell that word and stop screwing it up) after two years as a UDFA rather than three for drafted players.
He will be unrestricted if Dallas doesn't tender him. That may have been the agreement.

Not certain what your point was here. We all know his history here.

The question is can he overcome his a pattern of injuries and be the player people thought he could coming out of college?

He missed three games in three years while at North Carolina.

no particular point, just looked up his history which is matt johnson like.

Cowboys brought him in with the intent he would eventually move to RT. He spent 2 years in college working LT, this move was coming and now it is here.

As I said, I doubt very much that the league would approve contract language like that.
Who said it has to be in the contract? Jerry could have said "Sign with us and we won't tender you an offer after three years so you can be unrestricted."

I was initially against this move bc I thought it would weaken two positions (G the from downgrade from Collins to Copper and RT from Collins first year at a new position) instead of just having RT weakened.

I hope it works out, but I really big on keeping the continuity of the line intact--I believe that is a big part of what makes a line successful. We need to establish our formation and keep it intact.

Comes down to dollars and sense.

Why would he need training at guard? Of course that is where he is for training session. This is fake news.

By definition this is not fake news unless you think Collins did not say what he said. "This is misleading" is perhaps more appropriate.

“Oh, man, it’s awesome actually,” Collins said, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “I actually forgot how good it felt to be out on the edge, to kind of be out there on an island. Right now we’re not doing too much, just kind of working plays against the air. That’s about it. But it feels good.”

Every time someone bleats that we cannot pay big money to all 5 OL I say why not?

RIGHT NOW we are in that sweet spot where we are paying our QB peanuts. And our stud RB has 4 more years before being paid. For the next couple of years at least the cap will be going up quickly. NOW after that it is likely it will not; advertising revenue for the networks is going down and while there will not be a cut in the money going to the NFL it will not rise like it has been.

BUT the overriding point at this time is that we can indeed pay the OL money. And paying OL money is more value then any other position because history shows how long they last baring injury.
We have Tyron locked up. We have Fredrick locked up. Martin will be done probably this year if not next year. Probably this year sometime during the season. That leaves only two slots to go and NEITHER one of them will be that kind of money because there is no multi year history of playing at a Pro Bowl level.

If you dont understand why it will be impossible to explain it to you.
