The positive of this is they have this season to assess him as the sole WR1 and see if he’s the guy. Then they can figure out what to pay him.
He was used well in the slot. Especially when they got Coop going early. Being the #1 is not easy. And who will play the slot.

Tell me not Noah brown.

The real effect of Cooper’s absence will not be in his lack of targets but in the other WR’s.

I think tagging Schultz was the best off season move they made.

Best thing for Lamb's future in Dallas is to go down with an injury early in the season before we have time to see what he does this year. Jerry will pay him. Worked for Dak, worked for Gallup.

Trade him in 2024 and go with Gallup and Tolbert as the starters.
And draft a WR every year
That’s how you use the system to your advantage
There are quality WR’s in every draft. It’s not like edge rushers or QB’s which are very hard to find. WR is a fairly easy position to fill with a good player.
Other than the really hard to fill positions you have to only extend the really elite players and churn the rest

Dak and Gallup both proved they were worth extending and Gallup was fairly reasonable
Dak proved it over and over and without a complaint, bet on himself and played under the tag
The best thing for Lamb is to prove he is a one because that’s what’s gonna get him a huge deal

So honestly, do you think any other organization pays Dak what he got paid if he doesn't get hurt two years ago and turns in a 2022-type season (he was actually on pace to have a much worse season that year)? Would any other organization dump Wilson to sign Gallup, whose injury will sideline him for an undetermined length of time, with an undetermined impact on his future?

And I might as well say it worked for D-Law, too. His play was declining as the season wore on, but all we head about was that he was playing with a nagging injury. He got paid anyway.

If Dak was a FA today he would get more than we paid him
Gallup is signed pretty cheap
Wilson is getting just over 7 mil a year while Gallup who any team would think is better is getting 11
And we can walk away from Gallup very cheaply after next year

Lol. You took the words right out of my mouth. Some of our fanbase needs to chill. They look too far ahead at times.
He has to prove he can be the man without a top receiver across from him. I think he can do it but thinking and proving are two different things. Before I paid him I’d want to see it on the field
But I wouldn’t extend him even if he plays great this year. You can’t have every position on second contracts. WR is one of the easier positions to get a talented player at

Tolbert has gotten the majority of slot snaps in minicamp. He’s supposed to have some polish so I’m pretty confident he can step in day 1 and be a starting slot WR.

Lamb is under contract through 2023 and then will be have his 5th year option renewed for 2024. That’s 3 more years. I suspect they’ll extend him sometime during the 2024 season and don’t think they are even thinking about his contract right now

There are two major reasons to sign him ASAP:

1.
Inflation at the position has gotten insane. What would have been 20m$ per year in 2020 will be 25-30m$ per year in 2023 could be 40m$ per year in 2025. This is the main knock on Dak’s deal, not that he wasn’t worth 40m$ per year in 2021, but that he should have been signed to 32m$ per year in 2019. You’ve lost 24m$ in rollover cap so far by waiting to sign him, that’s the AAV of an additional All-Pro player.

2. Huge later cap relief by allowing prorated signing bonuses to hit in rookie salary years. I’ll show you what I mean:

CeeDee in 2023 will make 4.5m$, and in 2024 his fifth year option will probably be around 18m$. Signing bonuses can only prorate for a maximum of 5 years. So If he signed a 6 year, 240m$ contract in 2025 with about 1/4 of it as a signing bonus as you say, it would break down like this:

2023: 4.5m$ AAV
2024: 18m$ AAV
Signs contract
2025: 40m$ AAV with Signing bonus
2026: 40m$ AAV with SB
2027: 40m$ AAV with SB
2028: 40m$ AAV with SB
2029: 40m$ AAV with SB
2030: 40m$ AAV as pure salary, can be cut for nothing

Now, let’s look at it from the earlier 2023 wide receiver market where they’re making less. In this instance you sign him for 27$ a year, which is more than all but the top top guys made this summer, which will be the going rate next year. 6 years, 162m$. Also with the 1/4 signing bonus at 40m$. Also, because signing bonus proration only lasts 5 years, signing early will shave off a huge amount on the back end, like so:

Signs contract
2023: 10.5m$
2024: 24.5m$
2025: 27m$
2026: 27m$
2027: 27m$
Signing Bonus is already off the books:
2028: 21.5m$ pure salary, can be cut/traded/torn up for a new deal for 0 cap hit
2029: 21.5m$, can be cut/traded/torn up
2030: 27m$, he’ll never make it to this year, but can be cut/traded/torn up

amounts are lower, and give the team way more flexibility at the end of the deal if he turns out to be a Zeke, or allows you to upgrade his contract for no penalty if he turns out to be an Aaron Donald. Waiting only makes him cost more if you believe he’s the guy.

We can walk away next year, and we very likely will, considering he probably won't play the first few games. That's 11 mil tossed away. Granted, it wouldn't matter much sitting in Jerry's pocket, anyway. Right now, Gallup is not better than Wilson, because Wilson can play. It remains to be seen if he comes back the same Gallup, and even if he does, I'm not convinced he's better than Wilson. Just from a QB/WR chemistry standpoint, Wilson was better.

They aren’t walking away next year
There is no reason to believe he can’t come back good as ever. Players have same injury all the time
If you think Wilson is as good as Gallup then that might be why you aren’t a GM lol
If Gallup hit the market he would have got a similar contract that we gave him in a heartbeat
I’m a big Wilson fan but if you look at what his projected contract was that’s with a few bucks of what he got and so was gallups
Gallup brings more than Wilson and I really like Wilson and would have liked to have kept him too

The reason they usually overpay is because they wait to the last second
The way they over pay is by giving a guy a huge contract based on 1 good to great year.
Zac Martin great every year not overpayed
Randy Gregory one semi good year over paid
I’m glad he’s not here anymore but DLaw still is. Overpaid of basically one good season.

Now that we got the silly out of the way...

I'm interested to hear why you think Gallup is better than Wilson. Small sample size on Wilson, true, but I feel that he is more dynamic than Gallup. Now, if Gallup comes back and tears it up, great. If we're going to overpay guys anyway, I would have been all about overpaying Wilson. Heck, overpay them both to keep them. We had the money to do just that.

Very true. Remember Miles Austin had that standout season & afterward he received that huge contract? He spiraled down hill the following season & never played the same again.
