Let's not ruin all the progress by throwing him out there too early.

Let's take a look next preseason and then put him back on the shelf. That fruit doesn't ripen until 2025.

The greatest enemy of player development is impatience.
I don't disagree with you but I wonder if they could develop an RPO package for him on short-to-mid yardage, and give it a shot this late in the season.

They know better than I do if that is a good idea or not though.

If McCarthy is capable of rescuing this kid's career from the grave, he deserves a lot of kudos. We'll see... this was a Jerry move all the way and from Hutchinson/Henson/Quincy to Manziel to Paxton Lynch, I trust that guy's QB instincts nada. We got Romo and Dak in spite of Jerra.

The biggest mistake Lance made was untimely injuries. People have opinions on both extremes about him, but I don’t think anyone knows his real potential (or lack there of). SF was blessed with Purdy, which gave them a multiple year promising QB at low cost. They wanted a vet backup. So, Lance was dropped to 3rd string. He asked to be traded. Now he is learning a new system and being coached up. We will find out eventually what the Cowboys think of him.

Let’s admit, in deference to the NFL, Trey Lance is as useful as breasts on a fish. Let’s “take a look” at someone who at least has been playing quarterback, at some level, before considering a known failure to take the reins of the Cowboys.
Ohhhhh you mean like Tony Romo.?
Eastern Illinois powerhouse .....”at some level”

Throw him out there too early? This his 3rd season. He won’t be playing anyway this season, he’s not the backup. The only way he’ll have any chance of developing is by playing. The longer he’s on the sidelines, the less likely he’ll become a solid NFL QB. If he doesn’t get on the field until 2025 he’ll be stale. The Cowboys may look to trade him by then, because he’s not going to be happy as a backup. He wants another opportunity to be a starter and that won’t likely happen with the Cowboys.
Really hurt our last franchise QB when he waited and developed properly

Lance needs coaching and development, so it's good to see him doing what he can to get better. He can take what he learns to the practice field vs maybe the top CB duo in the league to test himself.

Tony Romo didn't throw a regulation pass until his 4th season. He wasn't activated a single game his rookie season.

Parcells not only developed him, but he made sure to put Romo in a situation where he had a fair opportunity to succeed. It paid off.

Only two HC's in history have developed quarterbacks who ended up as starters after not throwing a single pass for at least their first two seasons. Those two HC's are Bill Parcells and Tom Landry. Romo was the 2nd time Parcells did this. The first time was with Jeff Hostetler. Landry did this with Gary Hogeboom.

Forget Trey Lance's draft position, it was clearly an error on the 49ers part. He only played in 17 college games. Realistically, he probably should have been a 2nd round pick.

We will see if he is worth the trouble next preseason.

I love this trade by Jerry.

The risk reward is incredible.

Lance is incredibly talented and he is in a great spot to succeed.

If his work ethic is there I have no doubt he will be good for us.
is it incredible? so far, it looks like a trade for an average QB. he has strong arm. can run, but can't read defenses. he is not very accurate. so not sure about the incredibly talented part. Ryan Leaf was talented. great arm. pretty accurate. could never adjust to NFL game.

insert him into the 2016 Dak Prescott offense it was built on simplicity and effectiveness for mobile QBs. It limited reads, improved vision and separation. Then develop him slowly and keep expanding. I think the guy would be deadly.
or is this wishful thinking on your part? can he sit in the pocket and make passes? read a defense and make the throws. so far based on 3 years in the league the answer is clearly no. I don't want a RB playing QB.

Lance's biggest problem is that he just hasn't played enough football. There's only so much development that one can do throwing against air. Since he left high school, he has started around 22 games. He left high school six years ago. If there were still an NFL Europe, that would be where he should be sent to get live reps.

He's not getting on the field this year we both know it we all should know it there isn't a game where he'd be used and I don't see this year the way it's gonna come down to the wire that even the last game he's not gonna jump Cooper rush... So he will be fighting to beat out Cooper rush in training camp and he's probably gonna get the number two job next year I mean if you're not gonna be playing that much what does it matter anyway why keep Cooper rush around he's not special and if you're gonna keep Trey Lance on the roster his contracts pretty big you should make him the number 2 and get him as much work as possible...

He should at least fight for the number two job next year I would give him that job I mean Prescott's not technically injury prone not anymore than any other quarterback that's not truly injury prone I mean if he's not gonna see the field much neither is Cooper rush this guy's being paid way too much to just sit as the emergency quarterback so next year if they keep Prescott they need to probably give Trey Lance the job all things being close IMHO

do in NFL teams allow for them to play in another league under contract?? I mean why wouldn't we use the USFL/ XFL , I think they're merging, or the AAF??

I don't know what they're going to be called but as a grooming D-league type thing you know like basketball has... I know it's a risk him getting hurt but why can't we send players to a league that doesn't play in the same season as us and let them go play there if they wanted too??

That’s what I was hoping to see at some point in time.

Lance not listed as emergency QB and they give him a package that the opponent isn’t prepared for.

I don’t know that they want to take even one series away from Dak, but if the game is headed the way many of our blowout losses do from the beginning, it may be something to change that mojo….and also give future opponents something else to prep for.

I’m not sure how feasible it is to install during the season though.

Just like Romo, this next preseason is a checkpoint. Trey has to ball out in order to stay. remember, Tony started his first game in 2006. he came to the Cowboys before the start of the 2003 season.

we rarely see a young quarterback being developed in the NFL. Something usually comes up and he gets thrown in there prematurely and it ruins their confidence and development. We saw this in Drew Henson and Chad Hutchinson. Neither had any business playing in their first two seasons.
