The goal, as far as I was concerned, was to bring in someone to challenge and ultimately replace Rush.

I never had any illusions about Lance ever being our starting QB except in the event of an injury to Dak.
but Rush has surprised us all too....he is not a bust

And you saw all of this when? What games can you point me to so I can verify what you are saying is true. Are you at the training facility?
watch some of his play when was with the niners. then you say, maybe my eyes are decieving me and you look at the stats and see less than 50% completion rate. you rub your eyes again. but no, its actually less than 50%. yeah it was limited play time, but he is the 3rd pick of the draft, supposed highly talented, dual threat. then you look back into his college and see that he only started 17 games in college. having thrown only 318 passes. and you go wow. he is raw raw raw raw.

so far, after three years in the league, he looks below average. we traded for a below average QB, hoping to strike gold. what are the odds?
Just a 4th is no big deal on a player that went 3rd overall. We're getting a look at Lance at the cost of the pick Dallas used to draft Viliami Fehoku this year. Hard to complain about that.

I never said there wasn’t risk.

And there is a lot more to it then he can or can’t do this.

I’d rather take a chance on this guy then draft another Fehoko or whatever that 4th rounder that’s made absolutely no impact so far on our team.
ok, we take a chance. its a fat chance. worst case we lose a fehoko type (5th rounder by the way). or maybe we lose on a ferguson? or tony pollard or Dalton Schultz...its 50/50.

I hope he develops. but odds are long. he has only thrown 318 passes in all of two years in college.

He was given every opportunity yes, but he's also been hurt a lot. Remember Lance was the 49ers' starter in 2022 and then shattered his leg in week two. That led to Purdy playing and the rest is history.

If Lance didn't get hurt he just might have held onto the spot. We will never know.
Hurt a lot has been another issue with him. He was handed the starting job in 2022. SF gave up so much for him they had to play him. He was 1-1 in 2022. In the one full game he played he only completed 46% of his passes with no TDs and one INT. The game he was credited with winning he only attempted 3 passes before he was injured. I seriously doubt he would have remained the starter had he not been injured. He was given an opportunity to win the job this past summer and didn’t even win the backup job. The jury is still out but I wouldn’t be getting my hopes up with him.

Hope to see him play some as a backup next year. Would love to see him come up behind Dak and take over one day.

4th round pick for a backup QB is not bad. I do think Rush could handle it though. Maybe Jerry is thinking he could flip him.
They like Cooper. He's here through 2024 at least.

Trey is going to be a starter. For Dallas.

we are lucky to have the kid on our team.

When they cut Dak in March 2024, he will be the defacto starter.

Or Dallas can pay $60 million for Dak, who isnt even a Pro Bowl QB.

If the Cowboys think he can be a starting quarterback in the NFL Trey Lance and his agent will believe it, too. He’ll expect to be paid accordingly. How much is Dallas willing to pay a guy that never plays?

He’s a lottery ticket. He’s an athlete who can throw the football a mile, with touch. He has an incredible arm.

Problem is, according to 49ers fans I’ve talked to, he couldn’t grasp Shannahan’s playbook.

Kyle’s playbook is super QB friendly. Lance not getting it after a couple years just doesn’t sound good to me.

The Cowboys used a 4th round draft pick to get a player they had a 2nd round grade on.

That's a better deal than when they used a 4th round pick to get Dak, whom they had a 4th round grade on.

He wasn't supposed to be ready yet. Putting him (or any player) in when they aren't ready is a disaster waiting to happen. Sure enough he played and sure enough he proved he wasn't ready.

I love this trade by Jerry.

The risk reward is incredible.

Lance is incredibly talented and he is in a great spot to succeed.

If his work ethic is there I have no doubt he will be good for us.
Incredible talented at what?

He is a raw athlete, that is trying to learn how to play QB with zero reps.

do in NFL teams allow for them to play in another league under contract?? I mean why wouldn't we use the USFL/ XFL , I think they're merging, or the AAF??

I don't know what they're going to be called but as a grooming D-league type thing you know like basketball has... I know it's a risk him getting hurt but why can't we send players to a league that doesn't play in the same season as us and let them go play there if they wanted too??
He should have stayed another year in College.

Flip him for a conditional draft pick that other teams were offering the Niners?

Let's not ruin all the progress by throwing him out there too early.

Let's take a look next preseason and then put him back on the shelf. That fruit doesn't ripen until 2025.

The greatest enemy of player development is impatience.
Lance is a bum. Niners knew this and moved on as soon as they saw this. It's really saying a lot when the QB friendly system they have can't even make him look good. Like it did for Alex Smith, Jimmy G, Kap and now Purdy. None of those guys are great by any means but SF knows how to build a team and those guys benefit. Lance looked bad even under that system.

SF knows when QBs are done with and they move on. They did it with Kap, Jimmy G and then Lance. They don't care what capital they spent on them. They didn't keep Lance just because they traded draft capital and drafted him high. You see this a lot. First chance they got, found his replacement.

Dallas trading for him was ridiculous and dumb.
