I believe I heard sometime last week on one of the DC.com shows that the tag is based on the previous league year salary. So any changes to Fitz's contract this year would not have an effect on this year's tag.

Doesn't reduce his franchise tag, but does tremendously improve our leverage in negotiations.

Dez's argument will be that Fitzgerald and Johnson make a certain amount, both of their contracts are likely to be restructured. This will set a new standard across the league, especially if he has to play under the franchise tag next year.

WR money is going to top out around 13 million going forward.

Does this give us some more bargaining room with Bryant? Does it lower the Franchise Tag number?

It begins to reset the WR market, for sure. Look for Calvin to be next. Wallace, Harvin, (Vincent) Jackson and Marshall will come after that (either through outright releases or renegotiated deals). That's why it would be smart for the Cowboys to put the tag on Dez this season and let the WR market reset itself and begin working on a new deal next season. Too many teams have been burned on these 100 million + deals for WRs and the league owners are taking notice.

I still think Both Dez and Thomas are waiting for other one to set market value for tier 1 WR.

yes, this helps dallas.

franchise numbers stay the same but they can point to this as another indication of market price.

13m a year was a good offer if it was real money.

Well when Floyd is showing up more than you, you better take less money.

Still think Fitz is great though.

Dez is waiting on them to offer Calvin Johnson money.
He could care less about Thomas, tho the Cowboys would like to have more top WR contracts to compare for sure.

Dez believes it is him and CJ at his level.

Its physically impossible for Dez to be like CJ. So if that is his demands I suspect he plays 2015 franchised. But I still holding out hope he is not asking for CJ money.

That top money doesn't exist anymore, it was an abberation that is correcting itself. Once Dez sees that his options diminish.

As long as no one in the league will pay him what he wants, he may realize that he should resign here for what is market value. Franchising him will still let him test the market, and he will see. Should give us the window necessary to re-sign him.

I'd be happy to give Dez 13MM in something like 5 years for 65MM.

20MM Signing Bonus

2015 Salary - 4MM
2016 Salary - 4MM
2017 Salary - 7MM
2018 Salary - 15MM
2019 Salary - 15MM

Then the cap hit is 8MM for the next two years.

The contracts that were signed in 2012 are basically deals done in order to reach the negotiated spending mandates each team had to reach. Can't remember what the actual percentage was but in the last CBA, teams agreed to spend X percentage of total earnings on player salaries. That's why you saw some many crazy money contracts in and around 2012. NFL teams had to do that. It was never going to be a sustained thing because once the immediate spending mandate was reached, contracts adjusted and now you are at a point where the cap is more evenly spread out across other players contracts. I understand the desire for players to want those kinds of contracts but it's just not going to happen.

It is what it is.

Forget the per year number for now...
22 million guaranteed.
That is a giant number for a two year deal for a player at his age.

I think Dallas was originally hoping to pay just a little more than that (maybe 27 or so) over an 8-10 year deal.

Not really. He was scheduled to make that in 2015 alone. He basically spread it over 2 seasons and allowed the Cards to get out of the contract very cheaply after the 2 years. This is a great deal for the Cards. It's not a huge number at all if you figure that they were already on the hook for that in 2015.

He could have gotten paid that this year and went out and signed another deal for whatever money with additional bonus and base and come out with even more money in his pocket. Apparently, he didn't decide to do that but he could have.

D. Thomas will be a tick or two below Dez, D. Thomas is useless inside the 20 at this point in his career.
