Will Dak want to start the season? Sounds like a strange question, but think about it from a agents or financial perspective. What will his agent recommend?
We'll assume he gets tagged - so 37m guaranteed.
As I mentioned earlier, any athlete who has been out with a serious injury for months is very unlikely to hit the ground running (excuse the pun). First few games back will likely be sub par.
MM has used his free pass in 2020. He's now under pressure to deliver. If Dak starts the season slowly he WILL be pulled after 2-3 games. MM cant afford another mediocre season or he's out of a job. Any hope of a big contract for Dak will be gone.
Alternatively, it makes sense for Dak to go on IR and resume training midseason. Gives him extra recovery time and half a season of practice and reps, and possibly some gametime in meaningless late season games before he hits frew agency again. Allows him to hit FA fully fit, without the aches and pains of a full season.
Look at this financially. Last year it was reported Dak was seeking 100m guaranteed. He got 31 last season for part of a season. Another 37 this season for simply rehabbing. So 68m without having to do much or the reputation risk of a slow return from injury. Chances are some team will give him at least a 2-3 year deal with 32+ guaranteed. May not be the headline mega deal, but achieves the same aim (or more) without the risk and wear and tear of playing !!! And over a shorter period. No brainer.
