He's been medically cleared to have played in the Bengals game and now quoted as saying he won't play against the Panthers either.....

Lawrence stated that "not only will he not suit up against the Bengals, but he'll miss the Cowboys Week 15 matchup with the Carolina Panthers."

Kind of sounds like he took himself out of games he was eligible to play
He doesn't want to piss off the tankers.

He's a free agent. No reason to risk further injury before seeking what will likely be his last paycheck, probably with some other team.

Lawrence isn't stupid. He's taking himself out of the games (if that's the case, it appears to be, but nobody knows for sure) for two reasons:
1. Why risk injury? If Dallas doesn't offer him a new deal, there will be more than a few who will offer him money. Let teams remember his good years, not this year. Regardless of what some believe here, he still has some gas left in the tank, he can rush the passer and play the run. He's sealed the edge for Dallas for years, but because he doesn't get a lot of sacks folks think he's just goofing off on the edge, but from the poor run defense we've seen for the last couple of years not having him in there shows.

2. Why continue to play for a team so poorly run? He gets paid whether he plays or not. Losing games is no fun at all, IF the Cowboys had any real hope of getting back into contention Lawrence, and others, would play harder so as to feel good about contributing to the re-build. But playing for a loser organization, wht no chance of making a SB or even a meaningful amount of playoff games is nothing but frustating.

Yes, I know, and expect, players to play up to their ability regardless of how the team is going. But human nature steps in, realistically how many of us have continued to work hard as possible when your work isn't really doing anything. I saw many of my coworkers slough off in their job when the job was unappreciated, and just did the minimum. Playing in the NFL is no different. And I think he did play hard for a number of years, but eventually just got discouraged. He saw Witten bust his butt for years and years and never got much post season success, and essentially wasted his career in Dallas. His reward of the HOF as a consolation prize only goes so far, and is something to be appreciated later in life, after the sting of no rings is lessened.

Can't blame Lawrence too much, he was poisoned by Jerry's imbecility...

To the people saying he should just sit out, does it matter at all that he signed a contract that pays him millions of dollars in exchange for playing football?

What if everyone who was banged up -- which is pretty everyone this time of year -- just sat out once the playoffs were out of reach?

Other than the fact that there is no Super Bowl prize to play for, I don't think Lawrence feels like fans do about this team. I think he's just being smart about protecting himself since we can't get to the big game and he's an impending free agent. If Jerry extended his contract tomorrow, he'd be right back out there for the loser organization. Without an extension, he's got to put himself in the best position he can to draw another payday. Of course, getting out there and showing he can still play might be looked at as the best way to do that ... but he can technically do that by playing in one or two games at the end of the season. More time to rest his body and fewer chances of reinjury.

Dude has played his last down wearing a star on his helmet. He'll be wearing the Chief Blackfoot logo on "throwback jersey" weeks next year.

He's been in the league for 11 years; in 4 games this season he had 3 sacks. Obviously he can still play in this league.

Teams know what he can do, even if he didn't play another game this year imho that won't matter much, if any, to other teams.

Well, what he really needs to show is that he's healthy and can still play. What he did before he was injured does not necessarily show what he can do after. Injuries are what end many players' careers. Their bodies break down and just can get it done anymore.

To be fair to Lawrence, "Medically Cleared" doesn't necessarily mean someone is ready to return to the field. It only means the injury is healed enough to potentially return to the field. There are still things that would need to be evaluated to assess the player's "Physical Readiness" to get back on the field.
It's mental readiness. He doesn't want to play. Its the same rate of pay whether he's out on the field or in sweats on the sidelines. The sooner he goes the better. I don't want to root for guys who get too tired to play. There's hundreds of millions of people in this country who work HARD 12 months a year for 1% the pay that Mr. Too Tired to play makes. Go away.
