Phillips: Brandon Williams Tears ACL
Posted by rphillips at 8/22/2009 2:23 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

Rookie outside linebacker Brandon Williams will miss the 2009 season with a torn ACL suffered Friday night against Tennessee, head coach Wade Phillips said Saturday.

Williams injured his knee while covering a punt in the second half. After the game, he exited the stadium under his own power but said he would be re-evaluated in the morning.

Williams was expected to compete with fellow fourth-round rookie Victor Butler for reps as a situational pass-rusher. Phillips said Butler will move to Williams' strong-side position, behind starter Anthony Spencer, and first-year veteran Steve Octavien will back up DeMarcus Ware on the weak side.

Phillips said outside linebacker Justin Rogers also re-injured his knee in the game. The team's depth at the position just got thinner.

Elsewhere on the roster, Phillips said rookie quarterback Stephen McGee sprained his knee during his fourth-quarter touchdown pass and is being re-evaluated today. No timetable yet on his return.

Didn't seem like he was making much of an impact anyway with his various issues.

Ugggh.

Well, he left Tech at 20 years old and is still so young and probably still growing. He (and Dallas) needs to view this as a redshirt year.

Looking forward to him having a long, great career with the Cowboys.

Poor guy. Will he go on PUP?

No PUP for him. ACL tears usually require at least 6 months of rehab. He'll be ready for next year's mini-camps

Which is a good thing.

Yes it is. Solid special teams player and is starting to make plays on defense!

Well,
That stinks.

I had high hopes for him this year. Butler hasn't shown much, so I'm wondering where we are getting additional pass rush from....

Could be really bad...

Well ...... only good thing is I will not confuse our 2 rookie LB's named Williams anymore.

Tough loss ...... hopefully he comes back stronger next year.

Sucks to hear about that. I think he needs to mature anyways. 20 year old going up against men.

According to Wade, Justin Rogers AND Stephen McGee injured their knees last night and will be evaluated...

Yep. In a way, Williams' injury is a good thing because he hadn't shown anything up to that point. I assume he'd have made the team since he was a draft pick, heck, maybe even at the expense of a guy like Octavien who had shown more. He's been hurt so much that IR might be the best way to go.

But the depth on defense is desperately thin at many positions. Octavien is giving a glimmer of hope that he can do something, but our depth at OLB is non existent otherwise unless Butler shows something at some point. And cornerback isn't particularly strong after Scandrick.

Yessir. I'm concerned about depth at OL, CB and LB. Next year's draft should go heavy on the OL no doubt.
