Put him on the IR and pray he properly rehabs...

I don't think there is much praying needed.

This is a 2009 ACL tear... Not 1989.

Now if it were a microfracture surgery, then I'd be more concerned.

Greg Ellis and his "mopey" personality would look pretty darn good right about now.

No.

Way too expensive as a backup.

I like Ellis but not at $4.5 mil.

He was never a backup. Spencer is starting because they unilaterally promoted him, not because he outplayed Greg. And since when does Jerry care about $ more than winning?

This might just be the most asinine of your 16,829 posts.

I don't know where you got your info that Ellis was going to be the starter, if he had been retained.

I do think Ellis is still the superior pass rusher, but his ability to stop the run has nose-dived over the last two years. And he was never even an acceptable cover linebacker.

Spencer was going to be the starter this year-- barring injury of course.

That being said, paying Ellis or should I say, allowing Ellis to consumer $4.5 mil of cap space wasn't in the cards... Considering the mega-contract for Ware needed to be done, not too mention a potential contract extension for Spears.

By the end of the year last year, Ellis would start the first series, then end up being used mostly just as a pass-rush specialist.

Exactly.

I'm not sure how that translates into Ellis (being a year older with an even lower level of performance) being the starter in '09.

But I'm sure BB will let us know.

Would you prefer "starter by default"? It's not like Spencer was "coming on" or won the position via merit. He had two years to supplant Ellis and couldn't do it. And then, magically, the job was his.

Why not? We weren't in cap hell, and it's not like we had to cut him in order to sign our rookies or an expensive free agent. Last time I checked, Ware-Spencer-Ellis was better than Ware-Spencer. Penny wise, pound foolish.

That's future money. It has nothing to do with Greg's salary in 2009.

If I recall correctly, there was a push to create as much cap room in 2009 as possible due to something about the cap rules for 2010. At this point it gets too complicated for me to care about following the rules that closely, but that was the story I had heard. And it had to do with structuring future contracts, so it may have actually been a situation about not having Ellis this year helps them swallow the pill of Ware's contract.

Doc Oc is perfect for a MLB but way too small for OLB.

Keith Brooking..... 6-2 241
Victor Butler........ 6-2 248
Bobby Carpenter.. 6-2 250
Stephen Hodge.... 6-0 234
Bradie James....... 6-2 245
Steve Octavien... 6-0 238
Justin Rogers....... 6-4 250
Anthony Spencer. 6-3 255
Matt Stewart...... 6-3 239
DeMarcus Ware... 6-4 262
Brandon Williams.. 6-2 254
Jason Williams..... 6-1 238

Carpenter, Rogers, Spencer, Ware, B. Williams, and Butler have good OLB size. Since B. Williams is now out of the picture at OLB I guess it would be Rodgers to take his place, unless they move Bobby for the hundredth time.

Spencer, Butler on one side. Ware, Carp, Rogers on the other. Which leaves us real thin. The other guys are "too light in the pants" as my old coach use to say. To play OLB. Now Im not sure of every one of our LB's positions.

Octavien will be fighting for ILB, Hodge or Stewart will probably get the axe in favor of him.

Could we move Bobby outside if we need depth there. I know he played there as a rookie and that's where he made all the plays from in that Seattle playoff game. It'd be a good way to get his speed on the field every once in a while anyways.

I think Ellis is gone because Jerry needs the space to get Ware done... Spencer was just in the right place, it would have been Carp if he wasnt such a wimp!

That's the way it works in the NFL. Ask Drew Bledsoe. Untested guys kept getting his job.

So use him as a situational pass rusher.

I guess the Cowboys figured that he was too expensive to be playing that limited number of snaps per game.

Only because he was promoted, not because he was better.

Age and salary also have to figure into it.

I think Theogt answered this.

Let's not forget what a great team player Ellis was.
