Then what was his issue in preseason? Injured again? Not helping the case here. Not only was he playing average, he was also injured and playing poorly in preseason. Yet, people want to move the best guard in football to tackle (We're still talking about this?) to put in a player who lacks enthusiasm, played declined in 2015, injured, and lost out to a rookie.

Okay then, well maybe you can do that in Madden. Have fun.

Where are you getting this ****? I don't want to shuffle the line to play Leary?

Do you think there is a probability that he was looking average, due to his injuries?

He is a limited guard. Very good run blocker, so-so pass blocker. We ain't holding back Larry Allen(just in case one of you decide to throw **** against the wall). My point is that he still is good enough to start in the NFL. On a player level, it sucks for him that in a contract year, he has no game tape.
For the Cowboys, he provides depth at LG. I see why the Cowboys don't want to move him for next to nothing, but I also see why Leary is disgruntled.

No, but we might wanna pay the guys who can actually play or respect the guys who earn the largest supplemental salaries yearly as outperforming their contract for 3 years running.

As an agent I'd certainly take note of how this was handled if a had a really coveted UDFA client.

They couldnt tender him any lower then a 2nd and get a pick.

If they tender him lower they would have had right of first refusal.
Same as they did with Jeff Heath.

And what happened with Heath? They signed him to a 4 year deal worth just under 8 million.

Had DAL put the lower tender they could have agreed to trade him or even better, like with Heath, extended him long-term.

The R2 tender locked him out of any talks with anyone and pretty much guaranteed this stalemate.
Again this is not a johnny come lately take by me, I stated this all off-season.
The move was and is stupid.

I don't care if you see Martin and Collins injured, I wouldn't want Leary in the game mad at the team protecting my franchise QB of either now or the past decade.
This isn't some DL you watch dog it then bench him.
This guy can get a QB killed.

Teams may well have interest but the guy isn't doing anything so how can they feel they get any value this year?
And next year he's a free agent.

Why would they sign him long term to be a back up, and why would they sign and trade him when you have to eat the guarenteed money when you trade a player?

If you tender him a 2nd, you are free to trade him for less then that. Players have gotten franchised and traded for second round picks

I think he was looking average because he's only a little above that when he's healthy. He's a good guard, that is all. And I am referring to erod who wants Martin moved to tackle. And you said it, we're not holding back Larry Allen. We're holding back an average-good guard, someone I believe can and will be replaced easily.

We have immediate needs on defense right now. There were teams in the preseason who needed help on their line. You take the opportunity when it's there. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Seahawks are desperate for some line help, their franchise QB is getting killed.

That $2.5M would have come in handy in terms of rolling money into future years (or not restructuring Witten, etc.). But instead we've got a guy who is pissed off watching the game from his couch.

What's your OL for 2017?
You love Doug Free?

I happen to believe Ron Leary is the 5th best OL on this team.
I think he'd be a good fit at LG or RG with one of our stud Guards kicked out to RT next year.

Or do you think it's simply smarter to go draft a RT high in the draft again?

At the end of the day there is zero doubt Leary is one of our 30 best football players today.
If he wants to be overpaid I'd have let him get overpaid elsewhere.
But I'd have kept open the chance to re-sign him here at a solid rate or taken advantage of trading him for less than a 2nd.

Once he signed that R2 tender it was toast really. He gets 2.5 mil to sit. Yay team.

I agree. And he was replaced the day we signed Collins. The injury just sped up the inevitable for Leary. I thought he was going to be traded at the draft.

Over 5 years, which is 3 million per. Which even 10 years ago wasnt major money
The cap has more than doubled in a decade.
So that's 30m by today's standards and we have paid Leary 8m in his career WITH the 2.5m he gets this year to sit and watch and post social media angst.

disgraceful? No.
stupid? Yes.

They forced any trade to be a 2nd round deal which meant he was very likely staying on our sidelines all year and making 2.5 mil.

False. The only thing the 2nd round tender does is guarantee his contract for 2.5 million (which was a favor to Leary). They could negotiate any level of compensation from there. I'm sure if a team offered the Boys a 3rd rounder they would have taken it. As for Leary being vastly underpaid? There is no such thing as being underpaid for sitting on the bench (especially to the tune of 2.5 million dollars).

It's a numbers game for the active roster each week. Dallas and other teams only want to carry players that will contribute on game day. Since Leary can't play Tackle or Center, he has limited value on the active game day roster. He isn't going to play Special Teams or in sub-packages either so it only makes sense to have him active if he is starting (which would mean Collins or Martin is injured and not on the active roster). If Leary had position flex, he would be active.

I think they should trade him. As I have stated before, the benefit is two fold. First, Dallas gets compensation which won't be there should he just leave as a UFA. Second, Dallas can dictate where he goes on to become a starter. As an UFA Leary could sign in Washington reuniting with Callahan and improving a divisional rival. The Giants also need OL help and he could sign there as a free agent as well, improving their offense and OL. It is somewhat petty but it is done in pro sports all the time. As a matter of fact, it's done in the NCAA all the time as well...Saban never lets a transfer leave for a SEC team.
When he leaves as a FA, we will get a compensatory pick for him, just like we did with Demarco, which landed us Dak.

Frankly with his knee condition Id rather not sign him long term at all. Unfortunate but too much of a risk for me. If im making the call, I trade him at the end of camp. Win/win. We get an asset back. He gets a shot at earning a solid payday.

I think Green will be a upgrade over Free by next training camp. He looked very good with the first team in preseason. Struggled when the second team came in. I think he makes a big jump in 2017
