When he leaves as a FA, we will get a compensatory pick for him, just like we did with Demarco, which landed us Dak.
We won't get that pick until 2018. And unless he gets magically overpaid his pick will be no more than a 6th. And that's only if we do not sign more guys than we lose in FA.
I certainly hope we plan to spend some FA money on this defense in free agency.

The cap has more than doubled in a decade.
So that's 30m by today's standards and we have paid Leary 8m in his career WITH the 2.5m he gets this year to sit and watch and post social media angst.
Thats not even half what we gave Davis the following year. 5 million per back then was the average rate for a starting OG.

That comp pick value depends on the contract he receives and on the dollar amount Dallas antes up in free agency themselves. Recent history tells us that Dallas won't spend too big in free agency but for a pass rusher or defensive help ya never know. Plus, what was the comp value for the big contract Jacksonville gave Parnell who plays Tackle (highest paid position on the OL generally)?

Make some calls to seattle and GB, but just trade him. Maybe move a received pick and gamble on josh Gordon, either way at the end of the season leary is gone. Get something.

Frankly with his knee condition Id rather not sign him long term at all. Unfortunate but too much of a risk for me. If im making the call, I trade him at the end of camp. Win/win. We get an asset back. He gets a shot at earning a solid payday.

I think Green will be a upgrade over Free by next training camp. He looked very good with the first team in preseason. Struggled when the second team came in. I think he makes a big jump in 2017
agreed on trading him, which is why i'd have tagged him at 1.6m and kept negotiations open. --worst case i lose him for nothing except 2.5 mil in cap space but he's vastly overpaid somewhere else and i can tell agents i give these guys a fair shot.
when another team had interest i'd day we will either match or trade him to you for a 4th with you agreeing with his agent he will extend.
if they give him a massive deal and call my bluff, i call leary in and shake his hand and thank him for his service on his way out the door.

i had high hopes for green but that's pretty much disappeared.
i'd love to see him leap forward but right now i don't think he is a better football player than leary.
i think martin and collins are both superior OTs to green.

i get plenty of this crap wrong but i think this was one where i was absolutely correct.
wasting 2.5m cap space to get a late potential draft pick in 2018.

look man these people have families to take care of.
Even as an undrafted free agent, he has made more money than the average Joe Fan who is feeling bad for his plight.

My last shot at this

There was no interest in a trade from other teams......no one called

So it was cut him or sign him to a fair deal for 2.5m for the year to be a back-up and possibly trade him before Week 8......... this isn't UNICEF, teams do not just give young talented guys away

What's the point of not activating him if he's not hurt? Are we trying to trade him or something?
We generally activate one g/c and one swing tackle. There really isn't room to activate a guy who only plays guard unless you have too because of injury since that would mean switching another play if there was an injury in game

Clearly teams came to the Cowboys with offers of 6th/7th round picks for Leary and they deemed him more valuable as an emergency starting guard...as they should have.

320(+) lb guards who can't move particularly well, can't snap or play OT, and come with injury problems aren't exactly in high commodity. As evidence as to why Leary is in plain clothes on Sunday instead of in pads. If he really wanted to play he would have dropped 10+ pounds and learned how to snap (seriously, how hard could it be?). I have no idea whether he's ever tried C or not, but if I was a fringe starter level guard in the NFL Id be damn sure to figure out how to snap for job security purposes. But hey, making 2.5M to show up to practice is a pretty good gig too...

If someone wants to get serious about Leary and offers fair compensation then they should trade him.

Here's the orginal tweet he was replying to:

He's since changed his reply from the "100% 100% " to a more carefully worded: "Thankful for my blessings & and thankful for my trials. #PraiseHimInAdvance"

How much you wanna bet he got a call to get that inference that he's not really hurt OFF of twitter ASAP - and he did so. His reaction is completely understandable though. He's stuck between a rock and a hard place right now and the old issue of his potentially degenerative knee is probably still hanging over him.

I also think it feasible that the Cowboys are still working on trading him and don't want any additional injury to mess things up. Dallas is probably looking for something better than a 5 or 6 rounder and Leary is worth more based on his play. The problem with getting a team to bite for enough right now is more about 1) He'd be a one year rental unless a deal could be worked out at the same time, and 2) That old knee issue scaring some teams off.

Bottom line is he's in a lousy situation that is costing him $$, but it's the nature of the business in this case.

Wonder if there's a decent MLB on the last year of his contract? Here's a list, but it's ALL linebackers not just MLB.

(Impossible, but wouldn't it be nice if Seattle decided they weren't going to re-up on Bobby Wagner?)

Oh the horror! A random tweet about someone doing something for himself. The selfishness makes me sick to my stomach!!!:mad::mad:

Do you go through life constantly giving to others and ignoring yourself? Do you put the company you work for first before your well-being and your personal growth? If so, you should build a church in your honor.

Hey I get it.....you are just a huge athletic supporter......I'm glad that works for you

A guy that has made over 5M+ for 30 career starts doesn't make me weep

Nah I just keep it real. I'm not going to have higher expectations for athletes than I have for myself just because they make money than I do. If you don't live your life putting the company you work for before yourself, I have no clue why you'd expect that from Leary. Especially when we all know these players are one serious injury away from being discarded like trash by these franchises. They should look out for themselves while also remaining a team player. Leary has far exceeded my expectations in that department.

BTW, if Leary was a guy making 5m a year I'd have far less sympathy for him but he's making peanuts by NFL standards and was routinely given bonus pay for outperforming his min salary contract.
DAL essentially gave him a pay cut by handing his job to Collins.
Someone has to play RT long-term and Martin/Collins were good potential choices.

To me this hand been bungled badly.

Jerry has routinely taken care of players and looked out for their interests when he didn't have to. Taken a lot of flack for it as well. Leary got replaced unfortunately and is getting paid a couple mil to sit on the bench. Hell be ok.
