I don't see us going for Bowman at all now. I think we overspent at LB by getting LVE as it is. LB is a 2.5 men per play position. We've got 3 high cost players now.

Adding Bowman to this is just getting silly. We have other needs besides LB.

And some of us dislike his play because it was dreadful. If he weren't a high draft pick the Jones were desperate to prove was a steal, he'd have barely seen the field last year.

Smith had to start the first six games because Hitchens was injured. It was clear he was not ready to play that much, that soon. However, once he was able to go back to a rotational role, his play went from dreadful to okay, then from okay to pretty good.

Now that his knee is even healthier and he has a season of NFL experience under his belt, I think we could see more of the Jaylon Smith that was at Notre Dame.

He only saw the field as much as he did because of injuries to others. He was essentially a rookie who had spent the better part of 2 years recovering from an injury. It would be ridiculous to just dismiss him as a player before his second season, which he will enter healthier and with a little experience.

I couldn't care less who gets the lion's share of the reps, as long as the team comes out on top! Esch and Smith can compete to their heart's content and I'm hoping both end up in a tie! That way, they'll both stick around for a long time to come, regardless of where they're likely to start. If they both make All Pro, so much the better! It's all about the team.

One thing about these forums.... They’re very informative and revealing. I can actually tell what a person looks like by reading the bs they post and also by the players they so blI fly support. Even without seeing them play a single down they will project them as being better than others who have proven they belong in the NFL. Regardless to their skill level. It’s actually quite amusing.

Moreso than that, Bowman's not coming here to be a backup. If he hasn't signed somewhere by now, I am assuming he's good on money and looking for the right situation. He'd rather retire than come here and be a backup for a million.

I was very happy with drafting LVE because I think he’s going to be great with the potential to get better through a second contract.

But he’s a raw, inexperienced rookie. I’ll be surprised if he’s the starting MLB week one. If he is, then we either suck or hit the jackpot. Evans was more ready to start, but I think LVE will far surpass him given time.

Particularly with his injury making it hard for him to break down and cut laterally, Jaylon was a bad fit for MLB. But let him drive and cut off the edge, and he made plays even injured. Shutting down the edge is what he's best at, injured or not. And we put him at MLB.

He makes so much more sense at SAM, where he protects the edge and occasionally blitzes. The move to SAM made sense even before we got LVE.

I like it *generally* from a personnel perspective. Having the guy on the edge be the disposable cheapo player left the other guy having to go from MLB to a nickel cover LB, two roles that require different player characteristics. Edge players match to the speed, agility, and smaller sizes of a nickel cover LB. You want size and stopping power at MLB. Much more natural to have the MLB be a run stuffing specialist, and take him off the field in nickel situations. Stout tackling machines are easy to find and not really sought after because of their limitations in coverage. But let them only play in the base, with LBs who *can* cover on either side of them, and you're covered for your coverage needs while you get great run defense. We should have always been doing it that way if were going to cheap out on one LB spot.

I'm not sure who will play nickel now, because I'm not sure if Jaylon is fully recovered yet, or ever will be. And LVE is supposed to be very good in coverage himself, so he's real competition for play time in nickel.

But Jaylon was supposed to have elite coverage skills for a LB of his size, particularly in man coverage. If healthy enough, he'll certainly be in nickel when they want man coverage, even if there still might be competition in zone. They're all good.
That is what I saw

I expect big things from this group

We don't need a Bowman anymore....... JThomas and DWison provide vet depth and they all need to be ST aces

Let me get this straight...

A linebacker coming off a catastrophic injury, who is essentially a rookie, played less snaps than one of the best in the league (Lee) and a guy who played so well he got a massive contract in FA (Hitchens), when they were both healthy and somehow that means he's terrible? I have a hard time holding that against the kid. Lee and Hitch SHOULD Have been playing almost all the snaps when healthy. Smith wasn't even expected to be a contributor last year.

Not only that, but the guy was the third linebacker. It's universally accepted the third LB is going to play far less snaps because of nickel and dime D.

I'm sitting out most of these arguments about Jaylon because I've said my peace and I'm waiting for his play to shut up the haters, but this argument is just ignorant.

He is running, cutting, and doing drills without a brace or extra tape. They are saying he is stopping and changing direction instinctively without choppy steps or hesitation. Those that have written him off are going to have an ostrich-sized crow to choke down.

Is it just me, or does that look pretty sweet!!!
Only if Lee can stay healthy and Smith is healthy enough to make an impact! Until then I'd say this looks good only on paper. Come to think about it- all of them are somewhat injured or at least should have ? by their name.:(
