if he had been available at pick 22 or 25, would you have taken him over Felix Jones or Mike Jenkins?

At 22, probably not. The corner group was so deep this year that a good one was going to be available at 25 or lower, but Jones was kind a unique fit for what the offense needed. And if McKelvin would have been available at 25, it likely would only have been because Jenkins went sooner anyway. I think most pundits were a little surprised that Jenkins lasted until 25. That said, since Jenkins is a little bigger than McKelvin, and the NFC East looks to be loading up on bigger wideouts, I'd probably lean toward Jenkins anyway. I like having a corner who's big enough to slide over to free safety when he begins to slow down a bit. Again, like Jones, maybe a slightly better fit for what Dallas needs.

If he was still there at 22, they would have taken Felix. Jerry made up his mind he wanted Felix before the draft even started, they would have counted on one of the other guys being there for our 2nd 1st rounder just like they did.
Jerry admitted that they originally called in Jenkins name to be put on the card at 22 (the higher guy on their board)and then thought about who the other teams would pick and figured out the only way to get both of them was to take Felix at 22 and trade up for Jenkins.

Fisher admitted on draft weekend in an interview with nflnetwork that they would have taken Felix Jones.

Tenn Paniced when Jones and Mendenhall were picked and reached for Johnson.

potential

system, he fits that system very well

so that doesn't mean that he was the best WR in the draft so you stating that Mckelvin went #1 in the draft at the CB position what does that mean ?

Yeah, I saw his interview. He did not actually say that at all...but yes, after hearing the way he described their decision process, I got the feeling that Felix was barely ahead (but ahead in deed) of Johnson.

By the way, they are going nuts over Johnson so far. For their needs and taking into account their lineup, they very well may have gotten the better fit with him. We'll see.

This is the time he should be impressing. He's in shorts and gets to run free and show off his straight line speed. The test will be when he has to run in pads amongst the fat boys.

what in blue blazes are you talking about? are we even on the same page? I'm not sure the argument is about who was best, just how much should college production be used as a barometer

not much

No doubt, but same goes for Felix. I bet they both get over 1000 yards combined rushing/receiving--which are nice numbers in a 2 back system....especially for rookies. Time will tell though.

I thought you we're using the fact that MCkelvin was the #1 CB off the boards as validation as him being the best CB in the draft.

That's what I said, Jerry made up his mind he wanted Felix before the draft.

That would explain why he took back Jenkins name in order to ensure he got Felix and would take his chances at trading up for Jenkins instead of the other way around.

No, see you still don't get it. If they would have taken Jenkins first they would have had no chance at all of trading up for Felix. None. The only reason they took Felix first was so they could get both.

I get it just fine. You just have no interest in trying to understand what I'm saying. I'm not even disagreeing with you.

so the guy isnt the sharpest tool in the shed...as long as he can do his job on the field and keep his nose clean off it.......then its all good.

BTW, I am glad we got Jenkins....even though, I wanted Cason more than any of them.

Here's the Q and A from that day.

Eisen You were right there in the first round at the end of what turned out to be a run on rbs, Stewart and McFadden had been taken off the board and then Felix Jones and Mendenhall. You took Chris Johnson, were you coming into the draft determined to choose a rb and therefore choosing Johnson?

Fisher (taking in deep breath) Well you know what, we actually had a sense that Chris would be there, we certainly didn't expect Mendenhall to fall as far as he did which stimulated some conversation. (But) You know going into it we were hopeful that either Felix or Chris Johnson would be there.

We had done are studying and really like what we saw, he's a very fast player that can catch and run and will be a nice change up out the backfield. When he ended up being there we were excited and were prepared to take him and it was a unanimous decision, so we're looking forward to getting him in here and get him involved with the offense.
I took that as admitting that Felix was their target and Johnson was the alternative. Its about as far as a coach is ever going to admit that they didn't get there guy. The deep breath after the question by Eisen was pretty funny too.

Outside of his special teams abilities, there was not much that separated McKelvin from much of the rest of the cornerback upper tier. I doubt we will regret that he went off the board before our choice.
