Let’s not overrate Rams loss on run D

I don't like to ever proclaim I'm right, but come on dude, marrinelli was flat out not prepared for how the rams kept us off balance... We had a great run defense that got very badly out coached. I've watched this game over and over, they we're on their heels with a horrible gameplan... This is nearly all on the lack of adjustments and piss poor old school d marinelli was calling.

Agreed. Running the 4-2-5 out there constantly didn't help the run defense.

Rams were not concerned about Dallas run defense BEFORE the game. They saw enough on tape. Dallas has gone incredibly long time without disrupting DT. I would throw Suh AND 2nd round pick at problem.

Considering the Cowboys were 4th in the NFL in y/a given up vs. the run and 5th in rushing yards given up per game during the regular season...

I think your post is somewhat empty Woods.

You're better than that.

That's not true at all. The Packers rushed for over a hundred yards in their win over the cowboys in the 2014 divisional round playoff game . the Lions rushed for 90 yards and over 4 yards a carry in the wild card game the week before that. Th Montgomery rushed for over 80 yards and averaged over five yards a carry in the. Packers2016 divisional round game against the cowboys . the packers didn't need to run much though because aaron Rodgers threw for over 350 yards.

That is what I mean. If it is not the run game it is the pass game. The Dline needs to win playoff games. It has been proven that Dallas can't win with just offense in the playoffs.

The better offensive lines exploited our weakness. Rams and Colts put on a clinic, A woods, Crawford abused. Their guards were into our LB's so fast they were irrelevant. It was combo of being out coached and outmanned at the point of attack. NO had a great offense using speed, we can stop that. Seattle did it with attempts. Rams and Colts shoved it down our throats with power and there wasn't a damn thing we could do about it.
To be honest I think it was 80 percent Marinelli and 20 percent lack of a big DT in the middle. The problem with the Cowboys is they never make in game adjustments. It's like they are hard headed and want to play what the practice. They kept continued to slant their dline and they were getting pushed in the direction they were slanting. The pulling guard would come around and LVE was getting completely caught up in the wash and unable to get free to tackle the RB. Marinelli should of been fired after that game.

I thought you would do the smart thing and say that they lost in other ways besides run defense, instead you kinda seem to be looking for a bright spot from an embarrassing loss.

You can "think" all you want. The Rams base offensive (they used a high school power blocking scheme) knocked the snot out of our base straight up. Adjustments and scheme were our only chance, we blew that too. Richards was too busy interviewing in Miami to put together a plan to keep their guards off our LB's.

Their offensive line was superior to our defensive line in a big way. Watch the tape, it was a good old fashioned *** whooping

Many posters keep citing the Rams loss as a reason to get bigger run stuffers on the DL. While it is always embarrassing to give up 270 yards rushing in a playoff game, everything points to that game being an outlier. In 2018, our run defense was 5th overall in the league. We were fourth in the league in average yards per rush (3.8). We shut down great running teams like NO and SEA. We had two bad games: IND and LAR. As has been reported, the LAR collapse had more to do with being out coached than poor effort or play by our DTs. When you watch the video, there are gaping holes because DTs are out of position, not necessarily because they were being blown off the ball. And we cannot discount that we just got a bad “field matchup.” We are built for speed and penetration on turf. Put same DL on that soft, sloppy grass field and they are not as quick and disruptive.

All this is to say that... do not be surprised or disappointed when in the 2nd or 3rd round we go with an undersized 3T like Gerald Willis, Zach Allen, Jaylon Ferguson, LJ Collier, rather than a 320+ pound run stuffer. And if we do, we’ll be fine.

DL wasnt out of posistion. What happened is Dallas was running its DTs wide and trying stunts. Rams run a zone scheme which helps with these types of moves. What made it work was the RBs being patient and the patters over the middle keeping the LBs honest.

Richards blew it in not adjusting. What he should have done is loaded the box. Goff hadnt shown anything that he could move the ball with the pass. IMO Richards lost this game because he was preoccupied with his job interviews. Rams ran the same presnap movement and Richards made no adjustments to that. Everybody saw the middle wide open because he continued to allow his DTs to be washed as they ran themselves wide. Them middle routes basically kept one of the LBers occupied, and the C/G combo provided the blocks on either Smith or Vander Esch to get them long runs up the middle.

McVay basically owned Richards that sunday.

Maybe the best explanation I've read about the loss.

I'm fully inclined to support the view the Rams playoff game& most notably the 270 ground attack yards compiled against us was not an outlier, but, more along the lines of an arrogantly perceived & of the inflexible ill-prepared (standard)game planning OUR sideline field Commander (s) presentedo_O

* Man, the blueprint to negating the Rams offensive scheme was available courtesy of CHICAGO BEARS,,,"naw! We can't learn nothing by seeing how it was done ,from those guys"

We lost that game because our D co-ordinator decided to keep the opposition as faceless, nameless entities, aka 'we do our thing', despite Chicago already showing the league in December how to shut down their offence (hide your formation till after 15 seconds left on clock so Goff doesn't have McVays help with audibles) , which worked for the rest of the teams that played them in December and eventually Pats

Getting out coached on the D is an understatement so I guess that had to be Marinelli?

Well, one HC and D guy was happy because he just did whatever the Cowboys didn't do when he played them in the SB. No problem.

Coaching, cleats, whatever you want to use, it was a manhandling of their OL against the Cowboys DL and while I agree that you can't trend off one game, you can't gloss over a game like that either since it was the most important game of the year. And if they'd had a 330 lb monster in the middle, I am not sure that would have mattered in that game. The Rams were prepared with a sound strategy that worked just like they drew it up. And the one thing they counted on was the inability of the Cowboys to effectively utilize tactics making in game adjustments. Richard's adjustment is yelling at the players, that worked really well.

That said, I don't worry about that game because, imo, LA was a better team and so were CHI and NO. In 2018, the Cowboys were the 4th best NFC team and ended up where they should have. It's OK to lose to a better team, it happens. Not every game is "any given Sunday".

Yup, let's ignore the game that ended our season. Rah Rah.

Oh it was a whipping but that's typical of the Cowboys when they come off a big win. The Cowboys always spend too much time patting themselves on the back. But what your saying is the Rams just out muscled the Cowboys and if that were the case they would do it 9 out of 10 times . I guarantee you if they played to open the season that wouldn't happen. No NFL team has talent level with that big of a difference. It's about being prepared. Just like the Cowboys crushed the Jaguars then stink it up against the Colts. That's all coaching!

If 6'4", 350 pounds DT1 Dexter Lawrence were to drop to the 40th spot, I would definitely move up to get him. Or I would be happy with DT1 6'1", 320 Khalen Saunders if he were there when the Cowboys pick @ #58th spot. Both of these DTs are 1 techs who are strong/quick/aggressive and can take up double teams inside without getting pushed back or out of the way. Plus, they are big and strong enough to create havoc inside both against the run or attacking the QB.

Sick and tired of Marinelli's undersized DTs philosophy that never works. Always see the Cowboys inside Dline get pushed around and run right up the middle because of lack of size and strength.

I disagree with the premise of the thread, we did lose the Rams game because we got killed in the rushing game. That really was about depth, Antwuan Woods had never played more than one game in a season and that was the 18th consecutive game he was playing. He was exhausted.

They also said Maliek Collins had a knee injury, which was why he played so poorly. If you have better depth you avoid that situation, but a big factor was the Rams had a great scheme and executed it well.

Its not about plugging in a DT that weighs more than 320. Woods is listed at 320 and he is probably a lot heavier than that.
