Let's all just get it off our chest; Carp was a bad draftpick

LB was absolutely a need position.

you wouldn't know that by people that hailed the draft what you can do when you DON'T draft for need, would you?

Just drafting straight BPA is dumb.

Just drafting for need is dumb.

Finding where the correct middle ground is for a particular player and a particular need is what seperates good drafts from lousy ones.

As I said, in this case a good player was available at a spot of need. It wasn't our *biggest* need, but it was a good enough match of need and quality that you have to pull the trigger.

For the record, I was and am less enthused about the Fasano pick, and think you have a much stronger case for BP drafting favorites there.

well, all this i agree with, so no sense in just getting hardheaded to hear myself type. : )

i have no problem with carp as a pick and think people like quickdraw just need to leave their drama at the door and give the kid a chance to even play A FREAKING DOWN before the chest-thumping "I TOLD YOU SO's" begin.

I still can't believe all the people who don't remember how drafting a young stud OLB to start opposite Ware was considered a big need pre-draft. Everyone was bemoaning how stacked offenses were against Ware because there wasn't a huge threat opposite him, and how much more of a monster he could be with a top pick opposite him. Much like how many say Williams needs a good FS opposite him so that he can truly be unleashed. All we had there at the time was Singleton, and this was before any talk of the Ellis experiment.

Again, a lot of mocks had us picking up a LB, OL, and S on the first day. And the mocks that had a LB picked in the 1st round, of which there were many, no one was batting an eye at, although of course there were those who disagreed in favor of an OL.

The point is, picking a LB in the 1st round was not some random thing that no one expected, not by a mile. As I posted earlier, my own mock went that direction.

Couple points

One - Carp *is* starting for the nickle defense. Its not as if he's buried in the depth charts in all situations.

Two - If not starting your first NFL game automatically makes you a bad draft pick, then Tony Dorsett was a bad draft pick.

David.

we're not 5-11 anymore. We don't NEED every draft pick to come in and start RIGHT AWAY these days. These aren't Campo's Cowboys anymore!

Our front 7 is loaded. Does Carpenter replace Ellis or Ware on the outside? I believe Ellises transition to outside lb , changed what is expected from Carpenter. They moved him inside, a new position, and he has a lot to learn there. Once he has mastered inside, we will have a linebacker who can play both inside & outside. Outside we have Ellis, Ware, Burnette, and singleton, and all of them are talented & fast. Inside we have Adolye, & James, & Carpenter, I believe he could crack the starting lineup here before the season is over. Carpenter is fine, and our linebacker corp is awesome. No one is going to walk in and take over a job. Prossman
