There's a certain "Safety" who is probably only gonna play a few more years. This is his "son"

Overshown could be awesome if Dan Quinn uses him in that Kam Chancellor role, which I know most of us are assuming he will.

He needs a bit of time to develop and clean up missed tackles, though. My biggest gripe with his tape was missed tackles, actually.

However, the skills are there to become a really good SS/LB hybrid that would be a nightmare over the middle of the field.

Yep, and Jabril Cox better figure out a way to back up LVE quickly or he will be cut this camp.
Cox has been a disappointment so far, either couldnt get confidence from coaches or not able to excel in the limited opportunities.

Overshown has the skills in coverage to carry LBs and TEs across the field, and he can also spy mobile QBs.

He also has some skill as a pass rusher on the blitz. I imagine he will be used in a variety of roles depending on the game to eliminate a weapon the opponent uses and he matches up against well.

At 220 lbs— he is pretty light as a full time LBer. I am concerned about him holding up against the run.

6'4" 220lb rook with high ceiling.
Is DO playing behind Clark on the depth chart, if he puts some weight on does he compete with Sam?
Trying to figure out where this rook stud competes and finds his role early.
Replaces Kearse next year… spot and sp teams till then!

DeMarvion Overshown is more LB than Safety. His pass coverage at times was on and off. He was better being a LB who could run at the ballcarrier and lay a hit.

I think he fits in either the Kearse role or the Barr role. He's not really pigeonholed into either.

I'm not expecting much besides rotational snaps in 2023, but Overshown could definitely be a starter down the road.

Apparently the story with Cox is "one step forward, two steps back." They don't trust him.
I have confidence that he will get there. He needs to get in with the incoming 'tude coming aboard.

He seems to have the speed and physical impact that will serve well in connecting the defensive line with the secondary. Straight down the field should be hard to wrestle from the Cowboys.

The Cowboy safeties work well now, within system if the run is plugged.

"We've talked about that with our vets and with our rookies," Fassel said. "Noah [Brown] was a fantastic special teams guy for us, [Luke] Gifford was one of the best in the league. The door opens for someone to come in and fill that, whether it's [Devin] Harper, [Jabril] Cox, Damone [Clark], [DeMarvion] Overshown, [Tyrus] Wheat, Isaiah [Land] or any of the guys we have in here."

This will get him clock time on the carpet, if he fully commits...

LEIGHTON VANDER ESCH

Coming off of a year with his most production since his rookie season in 2017, Leighton Vander Esch earned himself a new 2 year, $8.0 million deal to stay in Dallas.

After bursting onto the NFL scene as a rookie, and earning 2nd team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors, LVE's numbers declined significantly in the following three seasons.

This decline can be attributed to a neck injury that required offseason surgery.

Post-surgery, the Wolf Hunter appeared to be hesitant to make tackles. Far from the aggressive player we saw record 140 total tackles as a rookie.

The 2022 season, however, showed a player who seemed to regain confidence.

It also helped to have a 320 pound nose tackle filling gaps, and keeping LVE free to make open field tackles.

Vander Esch will start the season as the top linebacker on the Cowboys' depth chart.

DAMONE CLARK

Much to the surprise of the fan base, rookie Linebacker Damone Clark made his debut midway through the season.

The Dallas Cowboys got an absolute steal in the 2022 NFL Draft after his stock fell due to a spinal issue discovered during the NFL Combine.

Once graded as a 1st-2nd round player, teams were wary of the back issue, and he fell all the way to pick 176 for Dallas in the fifth round.

The original diagnosis gave the impression that he wouldn't be available until the 2023 season, but Clark made enough progress to suit up for Week 8.

He immediately made an impact, playing 51% of the defensive snaps vs the Chicago Bears, and recording 5.0 tackles.

Clark will likely start alongside LVE in the Cowboys' base nickel package.

DEMARVION OVERSHOWN

DeMarvion Overshown is one of two rookies expected to make an immediate impact for the Cowboys defense.

Prior to the draft, linebacker depth was widely regarded as a need for the Cowboys. No one outside of the Cowboys' front office knew just how much of a need it would be.

With Micah Parsons declaring a full-time move to defensive end in 2023, the linebacker room became even thinner than anticipated.

A converted safety, Agent Zero brings that oh-so-important trait to Dan Quinn's unit: Versatility.

Expect Overshown to play primarily special teams, but slowly work his way into the defensive rotation at linebacker, pass rusher, and even at safety.

He is a LB, not a safety at the NFL level. Kearse is a safety often playing a hybrid role and Overshown would be a nickel LB who may play a hybrid role as well but it's not exactly the same hybrid role. Their coverage and run down responsibilities won't be the same. It would be more similar to what Keanu Neal did here than Kearse. Hopefully we play a little more traditional 3 LB sets on run downs and he gets some snaps there as a weak side LB, We finally seem to be addressing the run game issues with Mazi so maybe we'll be serious about getting a better run defense alignment out there on run downs. I think McCarthy put his stamp on this draft and team a little this offseason. Hopefully Overshown also wins a role in our nickel defense. The underneath zone coverage was poor last year. It could just be that Clark didn't have an offseason to learn the role due to injury but he was constantly out of position and unaware of who his responsibility was as guys came in and out of his zone and even and LVE has been average at best in that role since his rookie season. I also think if on the field in the nickel Overshown will be an effective blitzer due to his speed/quickness. If nothing else he should be a special teams demon year 1 but I'm hoping for a rotation role on defense also

I don’t think he’ll ever have a true position.

He’s not going to compete with anyone for a spot imo.

He’s just going to be used as a chess piece because he’s so dynamic.

We call Donovan Wilson a Strong Safety but the guy is really just someone you stick in the box and he causes havoc.

I'm still holding out hope Cox plays some nickel snaps, but it seems he likely won't have a role on defense and possibly may not be active on game day but he is not getting cut. Even if you want to put overshown ahead of him on the depth chart he is #4. You need LBs on the team. Perhaps if we sign a vet free agent it's possible, but as we sit here today he's probably active on game day in a STs role. Regardless of how it plays out his role won't be backing up LVE in this defense.

Exactly. Luckily DQ is smart enough to figure this all out and at some point he will start making plays for us.

Anyone want to suggest not putting too much on his plate, in some cases it's too much for these players a la Jalen Tolbert????
You think Tolbert's issue last year was having too much put on his plate? That's an interesting perspective. I'm trying to follow that line of thinking but Im struggling to come up with what he was asked to do with regards to various positions or roles that would have deterred his progress more than what any other first year WR goes through.
