Looks like a bad year for Will McClay

Fan Boys:" We are the best drafting team in the league!"

After getting almost nothing so far from this draft class...

Fan Boys: " You can't judge a class until several years down the road."

After cutting 1st round pick after 2 seasons....

Fan Boys: "All teams miss in the draft. Plus, our d-line is loaded and he isn't better than the guys we have"

Taco starts 4 games, registers 17 tackles, 4 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 1 safety, 4 QB hurries

Fan Boys: "Ummm, Go Cowboys?"

The reality is while it is too early to judge a prospect, it is not too soon to be disappointed by the lack of production from this class. This team and fans here have been beating their chests about ignoring free agency and just "building through the draft." When you claim this is your primary method for roster building, you cannot miss on your top picks. Especially Trysten Hill, who was supposed to be a pass-rushing 3Tech, where this team desperately needs someone to step up and take reps.

It's also not too early to learn from the mistakes and stop listening to the voices in the war room he pushed Taco over TJ Watt and Trysten over Thornhill. Hopefully, the Cowboys has some sort of postmortem process and when they evaluate what went wrong with those picks, they remove those people from the decision-making process.
Their top pick was used for Amari Cooper. I wonder how you felt about that at the time? He's a top five receiver right now.

This is a win/win thread.

The thread will be linked to as an I Told You So if Hill and McGovern's careers never blossom.

The thread will be forgotten in the mists of time if Hill and McGovern's careers take off.

See? Can't lose either way unless it is the latter and someone remembers the thread in the future..

oooh...I am going to keep a link on this thread so if they do blossom, then I can throw it in their faces.....if they don't I stay quiet :muttley:

I love me some Will McClay, but this can't happen again if we're going to pay big money to multiple players.

Trysten Hill is a B-U-S-T. They need to cut bait there fast. There's no "other" side to that dude. One tackle. He sucks.

Connor McGovern has a history of injuries, and might never see the field here. He wasn't beloved at Penn State at all.

Pollard is nice.

Michael Jackson is a Chief now.

Joe Jackson is just a guy.

Donovan Wilson is a maybe.

Jalen Jelks is bye-bye in the car-car.

After years of fantastic drafts and one Taco "oops", this draft looks dry as a bone. Not good.

McGovern has a history of injuries? He started nearly every game at Penn State.

Slanted opinion there.

It will also be linked as an I Told You So if Hill ever turns out to be anything.

Your implication that only negative posters drudge up old posts is pure garbage.
How is the opinion slanted if it only directed to the one individual--the person who created this thread--may or may not do? :huh:My apologies if you believe the post was addressed to you or anyone else other than the thread's author. Next time (if there is a next time) I will quote the OP. Then my "new and improved" garbage can be misinterpreted as just plain old trash (I guess).o_O

Crappy draft...but McGovern and Pollard good players to upgrade with, would have been nice had McGovern didn’t get hit with the IR...and would have, should have, could have been better had they not spoiled the soup in throwing away another high value pick on garbage. They did that last year and seem to keep doing this as a bad habit. If a high quality player isn’t there (and there was) you trade out and get something. Build up for a bigger draft, just don’t waste capital as it’s the only way you can forge ahead in strides. These guys they’re taking in Taco,Williams and Hill etc...trash that has no buisbess in early rounds whatsoever. Take your scouts and analytics and shove it...these players are like red shirt freshmen coming to camp. Nooooo....no business in the early rounds in that case. Someone in FO sucks at their job is what that is period.

yup pretty accurate. It's a stinker. That 09 debacle set us back quite a bit, hopefully this one won't.

We will be lucky to get 2 decent players out of this draft, not a Pro Bowl player or even starter but contributor. Historically, even pre-McClay, the Cowboys just don't draft very well when they don't have a 1st rounder...it's like it throws off their entire strategy.

Hey. Lets be real here. Mcclay gives the player reports. The coaches weigh in and draft. Hill was a ROD choice. Cant blame Mcclay for stupidity on the coaching side

Not how it works at all. The coaches have limited say in Dallas.

Huh?

@erod All of 'McClay's picks, as you put it, are on NFL teams except Jelks, would and should have made the team. In hindsight, the Cowboys should have cut Taco and went with Jelks at the end of camp. Cowboys couldn't get anything for Taco in a trade at the end of camp and kept him thinking maybe they could trade him later. Jelks wasn't injured that bad and could have played but the Cowboys sneaked him on IR to keep him for next year.

So, all of the players have the talent to play in the NFL. Hill may be the exception but we need to see more. And we do not know what McClay said about Hill pre-draft behind closed doors.

How does that reflect poorly on McClay? Missing on a late 2nd rounder is not a big deal. It happens to every team at some point when you look over a long period of time. Cowboys not having a 1st round pick has to be factored in. Had the Cowboys used a 1st round pick on a DT, they would have went with a different pick in the 2nd.

The Cowboys are looking for Hill to show potential this year to grow into a starter next year. He has not shown that yet. He was not drafted as a day 1 starter.

Your evaluation of McClay (and the front office) on this draft is wacked. I think the Cowboys did well when you take into account where they were drafting and missing a 1st round pick.

Will IMO is over rated. I mean take the top picks away and you really have average players to below. I'll give him some love but those calling him a draft genius? Really?
