Looks like the Boys Front Office was right about Sam LaPorta

It was reported that the Cowboys Front Office was high on LaPorta. So far he looks like the best TE in the class. I think he would've helped significantly in the red zone. Too bad the boys went with Mazi who probably won't make a significant impact until his 3rd year.
i am GORICO short for Go-Rico-Gathers...6 foot 8 with hands better than Witten and had hops playing center for Baylor....remember when he was behind defender in practice game and jumped and reached over defenders head to make reception the defender had thought for sure he was making INT?.....he
had amazing talent but NFL demands being able to learn playbook and duties of TE and Rico too immature to put in work..especially from scratch...it was possible
but he did not want it bad enough....what a red zone nightmare he would have been...the all time great ( Antonio Gates)on chargers TE went from college basketball to NFL TE...Rico could sub as OT...still hurts he did not make it...

I don't know what some on here are talking about. Mazi has played well so far. What was his snap count last game, 30%? He's not Carter but he's not been terrible. Mazi probably never shows up on the stat sheet like some want, but those DT that can do those things are special not the norm. I agree with many that the schoon pick probably was wasted, could have been almost anything else other than kicker and made more impact.
i cannot disagree with you...but maybe we give Schoon a little more time???...you just cannot drop lazer passes in end zones....why do we have such poor fortune
on 2nd round picks????....we have had a few good ones though

LaPorta is the sexy pick and Mazi is the dirty down in the trenches all substance no flash pick.

I was hoping for Laporta or Dalton Kincaid. I said on draft day I hated the Schoonmaker pick. It seemed like everyone on the board hated the pick. Even the guys cover in the draft weren’t thrilled about it. Speaking of tight ends I’m hearing Taylor Swift‘s next single is titled me and my tight end.

That's okay. Maybe next year they draft Brock Bowers out of Georgia.

Mazi is making significant strides and those that criticize him don't really understand his effect on the game.

On the Patriots fourth and one early in the second quarter they tried the QB sneak and it was Mazi who blew it up and pushed Jones sideways off the pile and his knee hit the turf before he could lunge forward.

Mazi also played very well the rest of the day except for one play in the 3rd quarter. On that play he was slow off the ball and I believe that was because he's still thinking instead of attacking on some of the defensive calls.

Also keep in mind that if, our LBs and Safeties are making plays at or behind the line of scrimmage, the Defensive Tackles are doing a great job.

So funny how CZers can't take a few moments to double-check the spelling of a players' names.
The first dozen or so times I wanted to make a comment on TE Matt Waletzko -- I had to look up how to spell his surname.
When he returns from IR this season, I no longer have to it up.
You no longer have to "what" it up?

Mistakes happen.

They were high on LaPorta.
However they were not going to take him in the first round. That decision was between Mazi and OT/OG M Bergeron from Syracuse.

Laporta was taken in the second round before the cowboys spot.

So it is all kind of a moot point other than saying they liked Him better than some other TEs.

So? I mean, clearly no one knew what the Cowboys were planning for the new offense or their draft strategy. Afterwards it all made sense.

McClay is right about pretty much everything.

LaPorta still wasn't worth the draft pick.

The Lions' offseason plan was so stupid I can't believe people give them any credit for anything.
Couldn't disagree more.

LaPorta has been outstanding in blocking and receiving. He's nearly the Lions #2 receiving threat. And Brian Branch, whom they also got in round two, is already dripping with stardom. Branch could be the steal of the draft.

LaPorta looks like a star! He was one of my favorites at TE as the draft approached because I thought we'd have a good chance at him. Definitely could have been the 1st round pick and I'd have been happy. So far the speed and ability to be a downfield threat is something that we rarely saw from Schultz or Ferguson now. He's like an extra slot WR out there

He is saying they had Swift and Hockenson and they "traded" them for Gibbs and LaPorta instead of keeping the originals and drafting DE/CB/WR, etc -the higher value positions. I don't think it is that easy as to why they moved on from the other guys but I think we both(you and I) are thinking of at the draft not what happened before.
