Looks like the Boys Front Office was right about Sam LaPorta

The Cowboys front office read it right. TE is a measurables position, and super-athletic receiving TEs like LaPorta are your difference makers in the league.

However, I think the FO galaxy-brained themselves on the Schoonmaker pick. On paper, Schoon has a really impressive bag of tools. Size, speed, explosion, blocking, he's got the whole package. But he never put it together at Michigan, and he had 6 years to try.

He was a boom or bust prospect whose 50 career catches had him leaning towards bust, and he played a low value position, where we already had two pretty good guys in place. Schoon should have been drafted a round later IMO. Now that he's on the Cowboys, Ferguson's emergence is really going to shut him out, unless he lives up to his seam-stretching potential and brings a downfield element that Fergy doesn't.

LaPorta still wasn't worth the draft pick.

The Lions' offseason plan was so stupid I can't believe people give them any credit for anything.

The Gibbs pick was pretty dumb. I remember thinking that it wasn't going to push their offense much but they thought they were getting Marshall Faulk with him. The Laporta and Campbell picks were straight up great. edit: and Branch too that was a pick I did not expect to be that good.

Lol. His name is Sam LaPorta.
So funny how CZers can't take a few moments to double-check the spelling of a players' names.
The first dozen or so times I wanted to make a comment on TE Matt Waletzko -- I had to look up how to spell his surname.
When he returns from IR this season, I no longer have to it up.

They were calling him a bust 4 seconds after the pick was announced, and you're surprised by this?

The same exact people are praising Tolbert for the leap he's made this year.
Not surprised. Just lamenting the stupidity. Again.

We still have Stephens coming too. Looked pretty darn impressive in the preseason.

It was reported that the Cowboys Front Office was high on LaPorta. So far he looks like the best TE in the class. I think he would've helped significantly in the red zone. Too bad the boys went with Mazi who probably won't make a significant impact until his 3rd year.
Are you saying
Why do I think this whole post was just for the purposes of getting a cheap shot in at Mazi?

The guy even had a solid game on Sunday.
Because that’s exactly what it is.

Or ever....sigh. They should have went after LaPorta instead of settling...per usual.

The mistake was not taking Devon Achane. This guys a game changer.

I'm not going to make a definitive judgment this early, but I haven't been impressed so far.
Yea me either. I can't believe it's been 5 whole months since the draft and he isn't better than Donald yet.

What a slacker!

Everyone saying Mazi needs time, mean while the other DT taken in the first round is amongst the best defenders in the leauge already. Mazi will be making an impact during his contract year. Mark my words. I just hope this dosent scare the front office from addressing the DT position in the 1st round.

Meyers would have been the play.

La porta looks good. On my fantasy team. Glorified WR

There's no such thing as a great off-ball LB pick in the first round. The bigger issue, though, is that they drafted replacements at non-premium positions with premium capital. Trading Swift/Hockenson for Gibbs/Laporta is stupid. They could have just kept Swift and Hockenson and then drafted, say, Broderick Jones and Zay Flowers. It's nonsensical to build a team like they did.
