Looks like the Boys Front Office was right about Sam LaPorta

Schoonmaker is contributing in more “under the radar” type of ways. Example: if he didn’t false start then he wouldn’t have been pulled for a play. This allowed McKeon to hustle down the field and save the day when Turpin fumbled.

Even Greg Olsen said that was a championship style play. Schoonmaker started that chain of events. If we would have drafted LePorte who knows what would have happened after Turpin fumbled.
lol. You're a true optimist.

I haven't written off Schoonmaker yet but they understood that La Port was big time. Nice get by the Lions. No doubt in my mind he would've been Cowboys pick.

Yea me either. I can't believe it's been 5 whole months since the draft and he isn't better than Donald yet.

What a slacker!
That's not remotely what I suggested. I'm not looking for superstar, I'm just looking for a strong basic skillset that can be developed. I'm hoping as he gets experience in the NFL we will see that emerge more and more.

It was reported that the Cowboys Front Office was high on LaPorta. So far he looks like the best TE in the class. I think he would've helped significantly in the red zone. Too bad the boys went with Mazi who probably won't make a significant impact until his 3rd year.
LaPorta maybe the best TE in this class but still not 1st round. I don’t believe any tight end is first round. If anything the cowboys should have traded back to 33. Picked up a cple extra picks and picked LaPorta at 33 or 34.

He was never going to be one year 1. Can he develop into one? Yes. And I'm not talking chris Jones level I'm talking daron payne. Paynes 12 sack season was an anomaly. His avg sacks are around 3-4 per year outside of last year. He's already back to his norm with 1 sack in the first 4 games.
Teams that are wanting to win now don’t pick developmental players

LaPorta still wasn't worth the draft pick.

The Lions' offseason plan was so stupid I can't believe people give them any credit for anything.
You are overlooking something important. They have a top-3 offensive line now and want to keep it together. Swift and Hockenson wanted a good piece of cash, and giving them what they wanted would impede them keeping that line together. LaPorta has become their second-best receiver and is a better than average blocker so far. Nothing wrong with that. The Gibbs pick...meh. I wouldn't have done that.

You may be making a mistake.
I don’t make many mistakes, but you do. According to you Deuce was supposed to be running loose. Lol The jury is still out on Schoonmaker and he may come around but he’s off to a very slow start.

Was LaPorta even a real consideration at 1? I know they had him ranked high on their TE board but were they itching to use their first round pick on him?

And frankly, TE doesn't seem to be an issue here right now and I don't think LaPorta would solve our red zone problems unless LaPorta was somehow going to bring a new OC with him as well.

Cowboys have a good scouting department, period. I had Kincaid higher, and was concerned about LaPorta injury history. What has Mayer n Washington done? If Schoony catches that TD last game his stock is up, but I think he'll come around to being a good TE, again, trusting a good scouting department.

Swift is still on his rookie deal. For what they're using Gibbs for, you don't need to pay anything. Hockenson's number isn't significant enough to preclude you from signing an OL, his cap hit is probably never going to be over $10m. It's an even better number if you look at it as Hockenson & Flowers for a total cap hit of ~$16m.

The only concerning contract they have on the OL is Sewell. They have guys to extend but a ton of cap space next year. They're fine.

There's no such thing as a great off-ball LB pick in the first round. The bigger issue, though, is that they drafted replacements at non-premium positions with premium capital. Trading Swift/Hockenson for Gibbs/Laporta is stupid. They could have just kept Swift and Hockenson and then drafted, say, Broderick Jones and Zay Flowers. It's nonsensical to build a team like they did.
Were you in their locker room? Do you have any idea about whether or not Hockenson or Swift were fitting in to their culture? From my readings, they were not.... and decisions about their contracts were coming quickly. So Campbell moved on from them and replaced them.

Its easy to sit in the bleachers and chirp.... especially when you have no idea what's going on behind the scenes.

They're so nonsensical in their team build that they're the favorites in their division, widely respected for the job they've done by former players and NFL analysts and have already beaten the Chiefs....

Just about everyone had LaPorta, including the Cowboys, rated a late 2nd round pick… blocking issues. There was no way they were taking him in the first.

I'm fine with the Mazi pick as it looks like he's slowly coming around... I'm fine with the pick not necessarily because of his on field performance but moreso because it indicates the FO is willing to spend high resources into positions that have been long-neglected and now we're seeing the results. I think taking a TE in the first is a sort of Cadillac pick.

If you ignore the Arizona game, we've had some of the best defensive performances in Cowboys history. I'll take holding the opposing offense to 0, 10 and 3 points any day.

blah blah blah

LaPorta is also playing 9 more snaps per game so far. Lot more weapons on the Cowboys than Lions so they spread the ball around more. Also, this might speak a lot about who the Lions have (or don’t have) as the backup TEs. Ferguson shares time with Hendershot and Schoonmaker.

Also, the Cowboys have been up big early in three games so far. So, the Cowboys haven’t had to go for the big plays and could go for the safe short stuff.
Right. Interesting if he keeps up this pace with Jameson back in the fold.
