LT Overton Camp

I think Overton showed a lot more playing snaps inside than he does on the outside, where he gets manhandled by OTs and not being asked to run the arc.

I think in a lot of ways he’s like Shelton in that he needs to work on his functional playing strength in general. Bama probably has a weight room comparable to any NFL team but my suspicions are he probably wasn’t hitting it like he should have been.
Draft reports for LT actually list his functional strength as a strength, Shelton not so much as you stated.

Overton (Alabama EDGE/DL, previously Texas A&M; selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the 4th round, 137th overall) is described across multiple reports as a powerful, physical, dense player with strong hands, a legitimate bull rush, and the ability to set a firm edge and anchor against the run. He is frequently praised for play strength, functional power at the point of attack, upper-body strength to shed blocks, and leverage/anchor that lets him hold the line of scrimmage and walk blockers back.

He’s not particularly good against the run. You’re saying that because he’s a middling as a pass rusher. Sorta the same way every unathletic QB is by default made into a “savvy intelligent” quarterback.

Here’s his 17 snaps. Three of them he ended up on the ground.

Overton was a noted run stopper in college. Only question is how that will translate to the NFL game, which is true w/ all rooks.

Overton was taken out on passing downs in college. No idea if anything can be developed there.

Shelton had a shoulder injury prior to the 25 season which kept him off the weights.

Overton is very strong. That's not the issue.

Schotty said in his PC yesterday. Overton is having a good TC.
And his pass rushing ability is good, they like what they see.

Yes, some will say coach speak. But I do not get that vibe from Schotty. Now he will not be critical. But I have heard him say this player or that player is coming along. Still have some work to do.

Overton can rush the passer, it's just that he's raw. In college he had no moves and just rushed without a plan. Let BT Jordan and the coaches work with him for a year or two and then let's see where he's at.

Based on what I have seen this preseason Overton has a nice future as a rotational piece and maybe as a future starting 3-4 end.

What does this mean?

This basically says "he couldn't rush the passer but actually he can" lol
What I mean is he has the raw ability and the power to bull rush; but as far as polished pass rush moves, they aren't there. The hand usage, the moves, things like that. He's too raw.

Basically what I meant is Overton CAN be a good pass rusher, but he's not there yet.

He's been doing it in camp and preseason games.

And it's been mentioned about his weight. He weighed 287 at his pro day.

Yup, I can’t stand the new rap, full of swear words and references to guns.

I still listen to rap from the early 90’s when things were more wholesome, I jam the Geto Boys almost everyday at the gym. Songs like Gangsta of Love that really hit home and brought out those warm fuzzy feelings, they sure don’t make songs like that anymore.
Geto Boys? Wholesome?

Lol, it was clearly a joke that only you and one other person seemed to get. I actually do like them and regularly sport a t shirt of the cover of their best album IMO, The Geto Boys which technically was a remix album.
Reading it again........I get it lol. Love Get Boys I think they deserve some type of biopic their story is NUTS.

Pre-draft scouting reports basically said Overton had excellent strength and poor technique, while Shelton lacked NFL strength but had great technique.

And I think that's what we are seeing. Overton has looked pro ready. Shelton will need at least a year in a pro weightroom before he can look like he belongs.

He is gonna be like a Marcus Spears without being drafted in the 1st rd.
Fun fact: the Cowboys had picks 11 and 20 in 2005 and Parcells wanted Spears at 11 over DeMarcus Ware. Majority won out and Parcells was totally ticked off until they finally got "his" guy, Spears, at 20.

I believe Parcells wanted Marrimen and Jerry wanted Ware.

So he will spend a year in a pro weight room, will he ever be as strong as someone who is just naturally country strong like Overton for example. I say no…

Duke Manyweather says that Shelton needed new techniques from what he was taught in college.
