Mailbag: trade down from 12 to add picks

Every team is thinking the exact same thing. Nobody wants to trade up in a draft where you have a few studs at the top and then 35 guys who are almost interchangeable in regard to draft position with depth through round 3.
It's the same situation every year.

Just last year the Cowboys traded down from 24 to 29.

I'm in the minority to trade up......So tired of the "Oh we gotta trade down....Need more picks" crowd. Wake up people......We got more picks than we know what to do with. 10 draft picks aren't making this roster. We need impact players....Not Quantity.

:banghead:
I agree it would be stupid to trade down. We need a impact RB or wr. Trade up and get Jeanty. Take a risk for once.

You still believe that story? That was debunked around here a little while ago. Jerry played into it for the publicity. Quid pro quo for his media buddies.
Never debunked. Confirmed by his own words. Don't believe the revision efforts.

While it's true that there was never any physical father/son confrontation between them, Jerry definitely wanted Manziel but submitted to the vast majority who wanted Martin.

“But Manziel is special. I know him personally. I know that he is going to be a success in the National Football League, and it was a hard decision. And it is one that I will probably have for the rest of my career think about.”

"I'll never forget that morning," recalls Stephen. "Jerry said, 'Let's go through the [prospects] again, make sure we all see eye to eye on how we've got 'em ranked.'" If Manziel was still there at 16, the patriarch added, "I assume we'd take him--wouldn't we?"

"I'm still so damn mad at Stephen," Jones exclaimed. "... I get madder, every day, about missin' (Manziel)."

"I listened to everybody," Jones said, "... and I'm ... not ... happy ..."

"There's only one thing I wanna say -- I'd have never bought the Cowboys had I made the kinda decision that I just made right now," Jones explained to Stephen. "You need to drive across the water rather than lay up. And we laid up for this one. ... We just didn't get here makin' this kind of decision."

Years after the fact, it was Jerry who wanted to trade Herschel Walker. It was Jerry who traded for Charles Haley. And now.....

"Best 'right,' decision I've ever made," said Jerry Jones.

Jerry Jones has always believed in the theory that if you say something often enough, eventually enough people will believe it.

We got more picks than we know what to do with???????

Yes we have 10 picks but 5 are in rounds 6 and 7. Those players only have a 5% chance of making the 53. No bueno!

Trading up is a horrible idea. The Cowboys aren't one player away. They need to trade down like they did last year. They got Guyton and Beebe with the 24th pick. that is how you work the draft.

When a team doesn't get TRUE starting quality free agents regularly, getting as many picks as possible is almost mandatory

I know this had been discussed. But here are a few answers from Nick Eatmam and Kurt Daniels.
They give a few different opinions and explain why about trading down, may not be the thing to do.

Nick explains, it comes down to players on your board with 1st round draft grades.
If we’re going for a wide receiver, and that’s what we really want, trade down is smart. There’s not much difference between the first and the fourth overall talent. If jentry is there, we’ll take him . That’s the only scenario I don’t see us trading down, we might even trade up.

Depth, depth depth

I think the point might be moot because no one will want to trade up. And think about that. If this class is so loaded with first round guys, why would no one be interested in trading up?

This draft has some good players but not many that knock your socks off. On the other hand, there are several positions that are deep and having more day 2 picks might yield more talent that standing pat on day 1.

But, it all depends on who is left when Dallas picks at 12.
