I'm not usually one to bring out the racist card, but this is an issue I actually looked into last year in detail so I try to at least point it out whenever I see it.

"Well Spoken" is one of those adjetives that is only applied to black players. It's essentially an insult wrapped in a compliment. Take two players (white and black) put them in an interview and have them say the exact same things. Assuming their responses are coherent, accurate, and moderately engaging the "scout" will apply the well spoken adjetive to the black players draft card. The White player is just meeting expectations.

Since when do we assume that white players can commincate and black players can't by default?

If he was impressive in his interview say he came off intelligent or thoughtful. That's what we'd say about a white player. If he just came off with an ability to speak correct English, don't insult the race by feeling the need to include that fact.

I don't think it's racist whatsoever using the term "well spoken". In my opinion, "well spoken" means not only to using grammer correctly, but speaking intelligently and thoughtfully.

I've used that term when referring to white, black, Asian, European, Christian, non-Christian (you get the picture) people equally.

"Well spoken" is a term heaped on black athletes. Me and my friends talk about it everytime we hear it... Don't be fooled my friend..

That's a load of crap. The only reason you think that is cuz most athletes just happened to be black.

Like I said, I've pointed out numerous times how much of an idiot Peyton Manning sounds but nobody cares about that. They only care if you criticize the way a black athlete talks.

This is not pointed at you directly, but quite frankly, if you haven't walked the walk, don't talk the talk.

I would not tell a woman how America is not made up of chauvinistic men, when they live in it.

I would not tell a Homosexual how he isn't pre-judged everytime he speaks, because I'm not gay.

So when I say that it bothers me to hear someone say "he's well spoken" and it is pointed at "blacks" almost exclusively, then I know how I feel and you don't.

Jay-Z sounds like most of the athletes you consider idiotic, but you could live 80 years on the planet, and then come back and live 80 more years and you wouldn't come close to the money this man has made, using his idiotic verbal skills.

I'm not talking to you directly, I'm talking to the traditionalists out there who still think they're better than someone because of the way they speak/look/or what race they happend to be apart of.

I couldn't stomach reading all the VY crap, but it's what (Traditional Americans) think of blacks. They are trying to figure out every way that he can fail as a QB in this league, and if I were any of the 50 or so QB's coming out that had a higher wonderlic score than VY, I would call myself stupid for losing to a dumb QB.

Don't be talking s*** to me if you don't know a f'in thing about me. If someone speaks well I have every right to point it out, regardless of what color that person is. If they talk like a freakin' moron I have every right to voice my opinion on that matter as well, regardless of color.

Manny Lawson was on serious about 30 minutes ago. I didnt catch the whole interview but he is very bright and well spoken. He was offered a basketball scholarship from Davidson out of highschool but chose to play football. My favorite part of the interview was when Manny said that he could see himself high fiving Demarcus Ware after sacking the quarterback.

I love it!!

I so badly want to see Manny Lawson with a star on his helmet. Unfortunately, I most likely will be very disappointed. Cleveland will probably nab him with the 12th overall pick.

Say NO to Jason Allen, I mean what's all the hype about?? The guy can't stay healthy at all, seems to be a common theme when referring to Tennessee players. :(

IF Manny Lawson is still there with the 18th pick draft him and count your blessings because along with Ware, Spears and Canty this front 7 will be SCARY for years to come!!!!!!

More often than not, race is mostly a BS issue in this country. Its far better here than anywhere in the world. Its not perfect but it never will be. More often than not, people, of any color or ethnicity or religion, separate themselves more than others separate them. Do people really think that if the situations were all reversed, that it would be any different? Do people think that a white kid at a majority black school gets treated better or worse than a kid in the reverse situation?
Furthermore, a majority of people in this country care less about your skin than they do about your personal economics. People who cry about racism should remember this. If you're dressed like a gangster, hoodlum, redneck, or bum and walk into an upscale store or apply for a professional-type job you will probably get treated differently than if you walk in wearing an expensive suit and it has NOTHING to do with your skin color. The way a person presents/carries themselves has a lot to do with how they are perceived and received.
In football, a lot of people say: "Why aren't there more black coaches?" .....Well the counter to that is "Why aren't there more white players?" "Why aren't there more asians and hispanics playing pro basketball?" Who cares? Whatever coach with whatever players that makes the most money and wins the most games is all most owners care about and they're the ones doing the hiring. The only people making it a "race" issue are what I call "Race-issue profiteers."
I'm not saying there aren't elements of racism in our society, but I am saying that people MAKE it an issue MANY times when its really not THE issue causing them problems. Its a tired topic and I wish people would quit using it to benefit themselves, make excuses, or cause trouble.

Well, I'm black and "well-spoken" so I guess I'll weigh in on this topic.

First, it doesn't have anything to do with race.

Second, it has everything to do with race.

Third, so what if a black athlete is considered "well-spoken"?

The reason why it's pointed out more with black athletes is because traditionally the black athlete has come from more economically and educationally disadvantage areas. As a result, our speech tends to be peppered with "street" language and ebonics. Not that there's anything wrong with that per se (language is just a means by which a culture communicates. There's nothing inherently wrong with speaking "ebonics" or the King's English).

But we do live in America where individuals who command attention in society are expected to know how to speak the common language. And black athletes are judged by this standard.

Secondly, jocks have a stereotype of being "dumb" which is why it can be said of even Aikman he is "well-spoken."

Unfortunately because African Americans make up a large percentage of the athletes in the NFL, they get more exposure and more attention when their speech doesn't come up to par with respect to the King's English.

I don't think that's racist even though it as a racial element to it. I don't think anyone is being a racist by saying a black athlete speaks well. I think it's a compliment.

Let's face it - more people are trained to speak common English than those who are not. And you would rather be able to understand what an athlete is saying and appreciate that athlete being able to communicate his or her opinions.

Just my take.

Sitting Bull:

Too bad that Cornish83's positive, patently-inoffensive post about Manny Lawson triggered more comments about race and statistics than it did about his vision of lining up next to Ware. Go Cowboys...

Thanks sitting bull...I have been out of town since I made my last post and I thought ***. I am sorry for mentioning that he was well spoken.

I agree with your take Tyke1doe

Pretty sad eh? but I am stoked at the possiblity of someone as talented as Lawson drawing potential doubleteams away from Ware and vice versus.

While I'm neutral on Manning I'd say there are a bunch of athletes who hardly come off glowing in interviews, though their skin happens to be white. I think that often people try to find ways to be offended, because no one is actually being offensive.
