I can only look at it as D. Davis is gone and now they have no Running Back... Bush would have only helped the rebuilding process much faster than a DE... You want a DE get the best guy in FREE AGENCY...

I agree, but you have to realize, Kubiak is going to bring the Denver blocking system to Houston and Denver rarely picks offensive lineman high in the draft. They typically look for a type of offensive lineman rather then their position in the draft.

And they have played the Eagles and Colts you know. If we had their schedule we could easily be 0-2 or 2-0, depending on how both teams played. Im just saying those are 2 pretty good teams to open up against.

I'm not saying the teams they have played have been easy but Carr is continuing to take a beating and it is not getting better. I have nothing against Williams and I don't consider him a bust at this stage but I do think when your a team like Houston 1 1st rd pick is not going to help you that much I think they would have been better off looking to trade the overall #1 for multiple picks in this past draft. As was mentioned earlier in this thread NO got a few calls about trading their spot when it became apparent that Houston was not going to select Bush so I do think there were some teams out there that Houston could pull the trade with. Also not selecting Bush had more to do with money than anything else which is why Houston choose not to draft him this was not about who they felt the best talent was it was about the money.

True, I think that is a whole different debate entirely. For now, I was just debating Williams over Bush, but trading down or any other strategy to gain more draft picks is another debate.

I personally would have tried to steal Bill Parcells' draft board because he knows what he is doing (excluding Offensive Lineman) :laugh2: .

I understand and while the Houston faithful were hoping for Bush or Young I said back then I felt their best chance to getting things turned around was to go for multiple picks and be aggressive in FA. I just don't think getting a DE is going to help turn that franchise around and in the meantime they are going to end up back at square 1 looking for a QB because they can't protect their QB right now.

Yeah. They clearly need an agenda and to maybe revamp their draft and scouting department.

The Tony Boselli debacle hurt their development imo.

If I were a coach of a brand new team I do this in the exact order:

1. Find my QB
2. Find the best OLineman or DLineman
3. Build up the defense

The offense, except QB would take a backseat to the Defense. With a strong defense, it will automatically keep you competitive..to a certain extent.

I haven't noticed any comparison between the average NFL lifetime of a running back and a defensive end, but the number of years a selection is likely to be available to help the team is much greater with the defensive player. Cowboys fans have a skewed perspective because Emmitt lasted so long. As a practical matter, I agree with Mick Green that usually a top flight defensive end is of greater worth to a team in the long run than a top flight runner.

With repect to Mario Williams, he may or may not pan out, but I think Jason Hatcher will probably be a greater star in the NFL, even if Mario finally cuts it.

I'm not as concern who will have the longer career as much as who will have the greatest impact over the course of their career.

This would only be a factor if the disparity was dramatic - like a 5-6 year span for a RB and and a 10-11 year span for a DE.

Mario Williams would nto ahve lasted until the 5th pick, if you listened to the ticket following the draft you'd know that Mario Williams was number 1 on 7 teams draft boards including your Dallas Cowboys.

If you have last week's Sporting News, former NFL Network guy Brian, I think his name is Baldinger throw Williams under bus hard. Basically that he's not a fast twitch guy like Rice, Freeney, etc. Say he won't live up to the #1 pick.
You may be interested to know BlueStar22, that "guy Brian" used to play for the Cowboys back in the '80s...
