Larry Fedora should not be fired for having an opinion, but the notion that CTE is some made up idea to take down football is absurd.

No one is saying football = CTE, as in for everybody. Fewer broad strokes and more pragmatism, please.

    I agree 100%

10s of millions have played football and survived

Are there some risks, sure but there are risks playing video games

Sometimes we get hysterical like the fact there are no more diving boards at pools

How do you get CTE and what exactly does it do to you?

I believe there is a connection between repeated hits to the head and CTE. And the league has to do their best to minimize the risk without turning it into flag football.

But I also know that the NFL has done more to lift poor kids out of slums and made them wealthy beyond their wildest dreams. The league has allowed these guys to get out of horrible situations growing up and allowed them earn generational wealth. We are talking about thousands of players spanning decades.

So yes, CTE is a terrible thing and needs to be studied more. But overall, the league has done a lot more good than bad for the vast, vast majority of the players who were talented enough and lucky enough to play at that level. Even the 3rd stringers make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

    That should be celebrated IMO.

I think they're targeting brain injuries wrong. Most of the rules are for skill positions and hits where the ball is going.

Looks to me like the problem is the 300 pounds men on either line throwing themselves as hard as they can at each other each and every time the ball is snapped.

Not saying so have a solution, but I think the skill positions are at less risk.

Guy loses job, fights with wife, wife leaves with kids, house gone, family gone, guy kills himself.

Guy plays football makes good $, woman, lifestyle, guys stops playing football, no more money, no more woman, no more lifestyle, guy kills himself.

    I don't see much of a difference.

I buy him talking about guys losing purpose after football.

I'm a hard sell once he starts talking about what he "believes" about the brain, like he knows anything about how brains work.

No one is saying end football, just that these literal CHILDREN that grow up playing it, and their parents, should know what they're getting into.

They bring up Mike Webster and Junior Seau like that is definitive proof but they never explore other possible factors.....drugs, mental illness, PEDs, pain, loss of purpose

The biggest problem with CTE is it can only be diagnosed post-mortem. While the person is alive they can only speculate based on symptoms.

The short answer is protein builds up in the brain and kills brain cells, leading to reduced cognitive function. The prevalence of it in autopsies of people whose careers produce increased amounts of head trauma has tied it to concussions, but the research is ongoing. Hopefully they'll be able to develop a test that can assess it while the person is still living, leading to better treatment options.

I still say make players sign waivers to play in the league. Acknowledge it is a violent sport and all manners of injuries both known and unknown can occur by participating. Players are paid handsomely and should assume all the risks when they sign up. Yes, the league can do things to try and reduce concussions but they should not even think about fundamentally changing the game because some outside groups see a cause to continue their fake outrage campaigns.

Whitlock is that you or are you just parroting his words? The nfl didn't lift or allow jack spit them kids talents did. Without their talents the nfl like anywhere else would give a dang about them. That's their choice so I don't really feel bad for them if you know the risk similar to smoking but this the nfl lifted folks up is such junk. If they picked folks that couldn't do something for them that's lifting them up IMO otherwise its just a transaction.
