I think it's stupid for a number of reasons and it's just another example of a coach that thinks he's the smartest guy in the room. I'm not sure how you properly evaluate players on the field when some of those players may not know the plays. Sure, it may tell you which players are more book smart or have better study habits but it won't tell you which player can pick up the playbook, learn it and execute it.

And it also strikes me as very selfish (for lack of a better term) on Garrett's part. These players are playing for their future and their livelihoods. The least our red headed dolt can do is to get these kids prepared to play and execute in front of scouts and other NFL teams. There was only a limited amount of time to practice and it just seems like wasted time trying to get the team on the same page. It's really not surprising to me Garrett's team lost and Wentz and company looked so ineffective. Just stupid.

Geez...Another everyone deserves a trophy for showing up zoner. The Cowboys did exactly the right thing with this approach.
They will not draft but maybe a very few of the players on both sides of the ball. The cream will rise to the top and learning
how to succeed without being given all the crib notes is effective at seeing which players get it and which are just trying to skate
by on athletics alone. The Senior Bowl is a detailed job interview for the NFL and if you want a job you better be able to perform
to the bosses criteria. Now that's pretty much what happens in the business world. Not everyone gets a job!

This is spot on. That game wasn't about Garrett and company getting a leg up on evaluation. It should have been about getting players up to speed as fast as they could so that the players could have a chance to shine in the game. Taking notes during a class setting really is not productive. It's been proven that as you are writing your notes you are missing out on what is being said. Hard to both write notes and listen to what is being said. Plus that just takes extra time. How about having a detailed playbook, go over said playbook and let players ask questions about said playbook?

I'm done with Garrett.

This type of innovation is fantastic. It adds a new dimension to the evaluation process. Measures whether the player has the mental acumen to understand the playbook. If his notes are clear and he studies he will get it. The coaches will see the results if the player is lazy in his note taking, lacks the mental ability to take proper notes, or fails to study them later.

Or the player gets frustrated easily, and cant focus on his job.......Just another way Assessments are being used in the workplace.... It's not like the kids had to take notes and then go play the game....they practiced (most important part of the senior bowl) enough to show the scouts what they need to know. Personnel Assessments and Emotional Intelligence is part of the analytics....just like the Wonderlic test. Players need to focus on the total picture not just talent..

I suppose it helps identifying the smarter players, etc. But sometimes the smarter players are not the better players. I am more of a fan of molding the scheme around the players, not try to find players that fit the scheme.

No kidding.

Jeff Rohrer, Yale, drafted in the 2nd round by the Cowboys was a smart sucker. The computer Gil Brandt used said he would be a great LB based on his IQ so the Cowboys pulled the trigger three rounds too early.

When Rohrer made it to camp he proved he was indeed a smart guy. Only problem was, he could not play football very well. He managed to hang on for several years (why, I do not know) until Jimmy cut him for running his mouth.

Yep, you nailed it. Garrett the Ivy league genius playing it like he can over think the football guys. Football is a very simple game. Garrett just doenst get it. Thats why he gets beat week in and week out by guys a lot dumber than him. Football guys.

They have playbooks for a reason. Been doing it since the game started. But Garrett knows better and is smarter right? God, when will this horror show end?

Football is not a "simple game". Football is a very complicated game especially the NFL, you see talented players fail in the NFL every year because they don't put enough work in. Have you ever seen a NFL playbook? I promise you that the Sean Payton's and the Bill Belichick's don't have anything simple about their playbook and I am sure they don't target dumb players either. If anything...Garrett gets a lot of flack around here for being too simple.

You're acting like the Dallas Cowboys do not have a playbook. This is simply a method they used to evaluate one aspect of the players playing at the senior bowl, which represent a small fraction of the players in the upcoming draft. The article in question features a player praising this method. I am sure they went about measuring other aspects of players as well.

"How Cowboys tossed out the book, used Senior Bowl as intelligence experiment...something foreign to themselves".

And then they came out unprepared and got it handed to them on game day. Solid strategy and seems familiar.

Winning or losing means nothing in the Senior Bowl. If the coaching staff used this opportunity to win a football game, they have a lot more issues than we realize. The purpose of the event should solely be to evaluate players. It is more comparable to a NFL preseason game.

I don't know what you are talking about. Never said anything about Cowboys not having a play book. Football is a simple game. IF you think different, then that is your opinion. Everyone does the same stuff all over the league. Route Tree, blocking schemes, blitzes, ect....ect... Its all about execution and strategy during the game. Pushing the buttons.

Their job was not to evaluate the players. It was to put their players in the best position to win and showcase their talent for the scouts and NFL people. Not some micro lab experiment for their own personal gain.

“You could see the facial expressions when we were in the meetings and (the Cowboys coaches) said, ‘We’re not giving you playbooks. Take some notes,’” Martinez said. “It was like, ‘Oh … I’ve never done that before.’

Seems really unfair to ask college seniors to take notes.

LOL............winning and losing means nothing? Wow, ok, whatever you say. They are out there just to have fun I guess right?

This isnt the pro bowl. The senior bowl is huge for scouts and player evaluation. It helps to be on the winning team, and usually the winning team players look better because they are executing more effectively. They look at these senior bowl tapes over and over again to see how players fair against top level competition.

Why would you ask someone to take notes when you can hand them a play book and be more efficient? Its dumb. Just plain dumb.

So we are going to draft the best note takers? LOL

Its the difference between having a company that has written policies and procedures and one that doesnt.

I am no fan of Garrett but this is ridiculous.

If you ask scouts, many prefer the week long workouts more than the actual game for evaluations. In the grand scheme of things, the game and the outcome is meaningless in scouts eyes.

For example, look at Wentz. Didn't have a great game but was impressive in workouts and meeting with teams and he's still thought of now as a legit Top 10, maybe Top 5 pick. The game had no bearing on his draft status.

So people wadding their panties over this is hilarious.

LOL.... Really, this was a job interview and not about winning a football game. Nobody cared who won the game. This was about
who is ready to be an NFL player and who isn't. You have to have more than athletic talent to succeed in the NFL and the Cowboys
now have a pretty good idea who does at least on their side of the ball.

You obviously know zero about the Senior Bowl. The practices mean more than the games, everybody knows that.

Not arguing your point, just seems sad that a college senior can't take notes.

Personally, I think it's much to do about nothing.
