I think it's a Terry Glenn type of situation where there best guess is that the knee will not hold up. It could hold up for a year and he could still be a great WR, but it's tough to take chance on that and his gun case.

My friend who's been a Colts fan since 1964 has told me every indication is he's retired for good because the knee is shot. Now he may get the itch come camp if someone calls him, but it's doubtful he can play in his current state.

Isn't Harrison in trouble with the law? I lost track of that, sorry!

No, he was cleared of the charges because of conflicting stories concerning the events. In other words, a bunch of greedy fools lied to try and extort money from an NFL star--they failed, and his name has been cleared.

I think he was one of the greatest WRs of all time....the classic pro.
From what I hear, he is not looking to catch on with just anyone or at any price. His release set him back a bit--even a stand-up guy like him has pride.

When he hit the wall, he really hit it hard. But what a great career.

I thought he retired too. It was very quiet too, for someone with his credentials. I thought the colts would roll out the carpet on his retirement.

This is correct.:D

Although Tim Brown, Jerry Rice, Drew Pearson and Lynn Swann are all available so clearly the wideout options are many this off season.

I don't think he has officially. There have been rumors of him signing in various places. I expect that he's not signing anywhere until TC is over. His knees may be in poor shape but he can likely still contribute

Meh... Marvin's "retired" like Daunte Culpepper was "retired".

To save face from the reality that nobody wants me anymore, I'll "retire".

But then I'll magically come out of retirement the moment a team shows interest in me and will pay me what I'm looking for.

Brett Favre knew he still wanted to play football after 2008, but he didn't want to deal with the embarrassment of being cut by the Jets... so he "retired" again.

Son, you need some learnin'.

Marvin Harrison is one of the best WR of this generation. He's a first ballot HoF'er. He has the 2nd most career receptions and is #4 in receiving yards. He doesn't need to save face.

Thank you, I couldn't agree more.

Furthermore, the other gentleman who said that his situation is similar to Terry Glenn's is wrong.

I loved Terry Glenn, I was a huge fan. But there is no comparison between a shaky-knee Glenn and shaky-knee Harrison. Glenn wasn't worth the risk, and everyone knew it. Even if he played through the pain, his upside was only so much.

If Harrison were able to play, his upside potential is still 1000+ yards (of course that's a big IF).

Personally, if he WERE willing to sign cheap enough, I would love to see him in a Cowboys uniform.

1) Thanks for the history lesson. I've been watching the NFL fanatically since age 7 (I'm 24), and I had no idea who Marvin Harrison was.

2) It's still an issue of pride for guys like Marvin. Jerry Rice was ready to play another year as a Denver Bronco, but decided against it because he didn't want to be a backup WR. Marvin was going to try and play another year, but the Colts wanted to cut his pay. In both cases, pride got in the way of them extending their careers.

Junior Seau also didn't need to "save face" by retiring after 2005. But he did "retire". And what happened as soon as the Patriots came calling with an ideal situation for Junior? He was back.

Jerry Rice retired because he was 42. That has nothing to do with face. Wait I take that back ... it had a great deal to do with face... the wrinkles on Jerry's face.

So your argument is this... good players don't want to play unless they have a good situation to play in? Wow. Remarkable argument. Any player is looking for a good situation. Duh.

You are the one who brought up "saving face" - don't back off that. Or do and admit you were wrong.

But hey, why am I telling you this. You are a 24 year old know-it-all. Stay in school son, you'll get through 12th grade yet!

He knew he was 42 before signing with Denver, but he still signed with them. So no, he didn't retire due to age.

If Mike Shanahan had named him a starting WR, he wouldn't have retired.

It had plenty to do with "face". A once-great player couldn't stand the thought of not being a go-to guy.

We're talking about aging veterans. Don't try to over-simplify it.

Junior Seau, a sure-fire 1st ballot HOFer, "retired" when he didn't think there was an ideal situation for him out there. He didn't say "I'm not playing anymore because nobody really wants me."

When you retire, you're essentially stating that you CHOOSE not to play anymore. In reality, for many of these veterans, the game is making that choice for them.

Which explains why as soon as New England came calling, Junior ended his "retirement". So much for that memorable "THIS IS MY GRADUATION!" retirement press conference.

He "retired" to save face. Just like Daunte Culpepper did.
But hey, why am I telling you this. You are a 24 year old know-it-all. Stay in school son, you'll get through 12th grade yet!
I feel sorry for a 40 year old who feels the need to personally attack a 24 year old simply because they have a disagreement. You appear to be quite insecure about your age and/or level of education.

I won't stoop to your level... I'm sure your existence is punishment enough.
