Matt Johnson Heading To Season Ending IR per Broaddus

Deciding a player "can't stay healthy" 16 months into his career is ridiculous.
Of course.

Considering that sixteen months is approximately 40% percent of the average shelf-life of an NFL player, you are so on point it is incredible.

Wait. Did you just imply Matt Johnson is like a lottery ticket?

Where is the proven value he has demonstrated in college that suggests he is this incredible talent? Grainy YouTube videos?

Teams move on from unreliable players each and every year. And the majority of the time, those decisions are the right ones.

I just struggle to see why this player, who will effectively be a 25 year old "rookie" in 2014, two years removed from prolonged uninterrupted football activities, is viewed in such a light.

It will actually be almost three full years away.

Johnson tore his bicep tendon in his fifth game of his final year at EWU, and missed the rest of the season.

Another year of Matt Johnson threads....... Give me a loaded gun now.

I was going to post something completely ugly, but I hate getting reprimanded on a public forum.
I get reprimanded from enough sources.
But... pull it baby, pull it.

Not relevant. Or something.

"Exposed to two separate training camps"?

So has Danny Coale. So has Caleb McSurdy. Where are the defenders for them?

The difference is they're not good enough to be potential starters. Aren't the actions of the front office and coaching staff pretty self explanatory on that front? They think Johnson is talented enough to hold onto, they clearly don't think the same of Coale and McSurdy. I didn't realize this was about defending players' reputations. Or something.

And again, very plainly, how could they have established he has the potential to be a "potential starter"? From what? He has practiced less and played less than both players.

The actions of the front office and coaching staff are pretty self explanatory alright. They just are not consistent. So a round difference makes Johnson a "future starter" more than Coale, who was far more productive in school? They have stuck their neck out so far on this player they are doing everything they can to see it through.

I'll take "Because they are professional coaches working with him on a daily basis" for 1000. The year before Dallas drafted Johnson in the 4th they picked CB Josh Thomas in the 5th round and for the exact reasons you outline, kept him around for two years just to save face.

Oh wait, they cut Thomas at the end of his first training camp.

And Thomas will be starting for Carolina while we are scrambling for a fifth cornerback now.

Tell me again about how our coaches are infallible. It is such a sweet story.

I can't believe there's this much debate and vitriol over IRing Matt Johnson instead of releasing him.

So the coaches keep players around to cover for bad drafting.... unless they don't in the case of Josh Thomas. And a draft pick can't develop after their first couple of years where they didn't see the field... unless they do in the case of Josh Thomas.

Thanks for clearing all that up.

Maybe they think he has a perty mouth...

Thomas at least was on the field for an entire preseason and camp them to make a critical evaluation of him and decide to keep Bryan McCann and Alan Ball ahead of him.

Has Johnson?

Tell me, yet again, where would this impression have been made?

The chances are getting big that Matt Johnson isn't going to be anything. If it was going to cost anything appreciable to cut him injured then keeping an asset for an extra year for a small amount more makes sense. This one feels like a non issue, except to people trying to enforce an agenda. The chances are good that if Johnson doesn't stay healthy next year then he's gone.

Honestly, Matt Johnson- the player no longer exists until next season.

I won't give this guy another thought, let alone stress over the guy, until next season.

The man is not a part of team until then.
