I really like a lot of the things we have done in the draft in recent years, but we miss on so many of the mid round guys. I guess it's better than when we used to miss on 2nd and 3rd rounders, but we still need to get better.
Josh Thomas, 5th round (2011), a waste. David Arkin, 4th round (2011), only slightly more usefull. Danny Coale, 5th round (2012) a waste, Matt Johnson, 4th round (2012), a waste, Kyle Wilbur, 4th round (2012), looks to be a waste. This year's draft looks better, but that's 5 picks that we have very little to show for.

These so-called drear drafts are getting more and more average as time goes by.

Thank you!!! You guys on here keep using Jimmy Smith and Danny Amendola (2 players out of hundreds) to justify keeping uselessness on this team. "Potential" is nothing if your never gonna have the opportunity to show it, and now honestly, who even sees him being healthy next year? I have no confidence in his health.

Also...PUP list wasn't an option? Is he really that hurt?

Even Amendola wasn't "useless". He produced about as much as Cole Beasley did last year except he fumbled a punt in an exhibition. He did not do everything perfect and since he did not, it was not enough to overcome the fact he did not fit the physical profile Garrett wanted at the time.

PUP was not an option since he miraculously appeared in part of the Hall of Fame game and a few practices.

If things do not improve soon, the 2012 draft could look more and more like 2009 in a few years.

It would go along way with the fans if they just admit they made a mistake instead of saving face. I'm not coming out and saying they made a mistake but cut the mistake and move on.

Then let me say it for you. They made a mistake.

Whoever pushed for that pick needs to be fired or at the very least silenced in the war room going forward.

Complaining about not cutting a guy who isn't going to take up a spot on the 53-man roster, I don't get it.

We should just trade away our 4th round draft picks for whatever we can get. This team has made terrible picks in the 4th round the last 10 years.

Jimmy Smith actually played some and was hurt, but not football-related other than his broken leg in his rookie year.Jimmy Smith was cut moreso because of a snit with Jerry Jones than anything else.

I'm sure both factors contributed. In terms of his Dallas career, Jimmy Smith had zero catches in two years for Dallas and more than 800 after leaving. The point isn't that Johnson is another Smith, the point is that there are no good reasons to cut Johnson and plenty of reasons to put him on the IR.

If you have a lottery ticket, you don't tear it up until the numbers are called. It may turn out to be nothing, it may turn out to be a lot or it may turn out to be five bucks. But its stupid to tear up the ticket before you know what its going to be.

Read into that what you will, but it is what it is. My opinion is he's a guy they really want to see what they've got with, and there's no reason to belittle the pick just because it wasn't what Mike Mayock would have done or because they guy's been hurt. If he can't ever get on the field, he'll get cut. But as long as it costs us little or nothing to keep his rights, we're apparently determined to find out what he's got.

This thread will be hilarious is the Vikings put Sharrif Floyd on the IR.

Sorry I meant they don't have to actually come out and say they made the mistake just cut the mistake. Oh no I agree they made a huge mistake here

Wait. Did you just imply Matt Johnson is like a lottery ticket?

Where is the proven value he has demonstrated in college that suggests he is this incredible talent? Grainy YouTube videos?

Teams move on from unreliable players each and every year. And the majority of the time, those decisions are the right ones.

I just struggle to see why this player, who will effectively be a 25 year old "rookie" in 2014, two years removed from prolonged uninterrupted football activities, is viewed in such a light.

I'm almost positive the someone within the team has said they drafted him too high. It was in an article a while back, can't really remember which one, but that was the meat and bones of the comment.

Glad we didn't cut Matt Johnson. He's had terrible luck but has the skill set to be a good NFL safety. No need to throw that away. It's unfortunate that he's gone for the year. I really had hoped that he would've pushed McCray off the roster. Glad we have Wilcox and hopefully Heath (assuming he makes it) can develop.

Trying to save face for investing a 4th round pick.

I remember how they talked about sweating it out after taking Wilber with the 113th pick that Johnson would "last" until pick 135.

Amazingly he did.

This.

Last Years draft was very questionable. give away a second round and the 3rd rd pick is in IR, who knows what he has - drafted as a 3-4, etc. Then you get Wilbur, Johnson, Hanna, and McSurdy.

There is a large probability that we come away with 1 decent player from that draft. Hanna might be ok, but we turn around the next year and and draft a TE in the second Rd, apparently we are going to be New England for the 5th year running - but then draft a WR this year in the 3rd. Anyway after the 2009 debacle (http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/cowboys/post/_/id/4707009/the-bad-2009-class-is-officially-over) there is little doubt why there is some talent and depth issues.
