We coulda drafted a player like that anytime.

A strange draft pick.
we already had a couple of guys that play 3 tech, but needed a big body in the middle that demands double teams. Mazi is the big body. our problems weren't pass rushing, it was inability to stop the run effectively. we were third in sacks with 54. but ranked 16th in run defense with average of 4.4 ypc. ranked 22nd in total rushing yards. so hopefully those numbers will shrink.

This was the big issue that I saw in his first preseason game. Once the ball was snapped he was one of the last to move on our line. At times it looked like he was just waiting for the double team so he could take them on. If he is going to have any success rushing the passer or collapsing the pocket they will need to teach him quicker technique or ques getting off the ball quicker. He is going to have to do more than just take on the double team and not give up ground. And its not like he was NOT giving up ground at times either. He definitely isn't quick enough to chase down QB's.
I would imagine that he was tentative as a rook in his first action. That will have to improve, no doubt.

That’s kind of going to be his gig. Take on doubles and clog the spot. As he gets better he will attack the double and hold the spot in the backfield.
Gotta be quick off the snap for the other team to double you in the first place.

Mazi was a traits pick. Hope he can play up to his excellent athleticism.

If he was there for speed ,he would be on the edge, genius
Not speed, quickness. Your NT needs phone booth quickness. If he is to command doubles, then he must be quick off the snap and quick into the opposing DLine.

He’s just being controversial. Yes, I understand quickness, I understand speed I understand Power.

I don’t feel like playing with words today. but let’s use the word clog. Is there a clog up the middle so the defensive ends can get there. And he can stop the run. I’m positive he has all the quickness he needs if he had to get to the quarterback.

Stoned, why not high . Do you like playing word games today?
The fact that you don't think quickness and speed are things that can help a DT is troubling. The pass rush upside and athleticism is definitely something that was talked about as a reason why he was drafted.

Technique is an issue for him right now. He is very raw. He needs to be coached up and getting off the ball quicker and getting into the Oline first will help him. Right now he appears to be a little too reactionary.

Its one preseason game, but its clear they wanted to get him as much PT as possible. He played well into the 3rd quarter.

Mazi’s NFL draft profile.

He’s 2nd day talent.

Overview:

“Dontari Poe might be the physical and athletic player comparison for Smith, but more consistency from Smith is needed before he finds the Pro Bowl, as Poe did twice in his career. Smith’s blend of size and quickness is rare. He can punch and control a base block with relative ease. However, he struggles to match the initial movement of move blockers, which diminishes his effectiveness. He has space-eating potential but needs to become more consistent at taking on double teams and securing his gap. Smith’s size and testing could give his draft slotting some juice but he’s more of a Day 2 talent with exciting upside than a plug-and-play starter.”

making things up again. I simply said they did not sign him for speed. Everyone and their brother knows it was because of his strength. Except you I guess.
