That's from an attorney. Not me. So keep that in mind. I just happen to agree with the attorney. Because what he says checks out, if you look at it from a real-world perspective.
The problem is that article is way outdated. It was posted March 2nd, and 2 weeks later he entered into a plea agreement with the state that they wouldn’t pursue elevated charges if he accepted a year’s probation.

https://www.kxan.com/sports/sports-illustrated/baca21e5/jalen-carter-enters-plea-deal-to-traffic-charges/#:~:text=Former Georgia defensive lineman Jalen, program, his lawyer Kim T.

The case is resolved from a legal standpoint for Jalen; all that’s left now is the civil case.

I personally think Carter is a down grade from Hargrave. In fact of the 8 starters that they lost all were down grades in my opinion.

Mazi in my opinion is a upgrade to what we had a year ago.
LOL....yeah that's not wishful thinking or anything....it's completely objective I'm sure

Feel free to dispute it. I'm more than sure that no one can dispute this as fact.

There are a couple areas where Mazi Smith beats Jalen Carter, who was drafted much higher than Smith.

First, risk.

The biggest risk for Jalen Carter, in my opinion, is the video involving him in the crash. He has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor. However, more serious charges could come later. And quite honestly, they should and probably will.

"Although he’s charged with a misdemeanor. Now, once it gets over to the solicitor’s office or to the district attorney’s office, it can be upgraded to a felony,” attorney Patterson told WSBTV. "And it is no doubt that if he was not a University of Georgia football player, he probably would be charged with felony vehicular homicide."

Depending on how hard media coverage presses the local solicitor's office, it's possible Carter may never even see the field. It's true. If he was not a University of Georgia football player, he would likely be charged with vehicular homicide. The only reason they've gotten away with it, is because the media hasn't pressed them on it, or fought too hard to make this a story. But it is a story that would be important to the public interest. And it has the potential to gain traction and wheels to travel. That was my number 1 reason for not taking Jalen Carter too seriously: I didn't think the Cowboys would do it, because hopefully they had been advised of the legal implications and what happened. The video looks bad. And the news press will determine his fate.

Second, and probably less important, is RAS. Mazi at 9.99 vs. Carter at around 9. Down the line, with coaching and experience, and getting even stronger, Smith still has potential to be someone like Poe while Carter likely still hasn't gotten over his maturity hump, much like our Sam Williams. In any case, the more I learn about Smith, the more I like his potential on our team. Kudos to the scouting team on this one. They brought me back from apathy to being a hardcore fan again these past few years. Loving the product they are putting out there. Even the homegrown ones. lol
In my pre-draft review of Mazi, I said that the team that drafts him should consider having him keep his weight down and let him play as a 3tech DT.

No point drafting a run downs only 1tech DT in the 1st round. Youn can that type of player in the 3rd (Siaki Ika at #98).

1st and 10:
3tech: Mazi
1tech: Hankins

2nd and 6:
3tech: Odighi
1tech: Mazi

3rd and 10:
3-man DL
Mazi at 0tech
Parsons at off-ball LB behind Mazi. Can rush in either A-gap or either B-gap or drop in coverage.

Carter seems to have the same issue that Joseph and Morant have. Growing up and idolizing bangers and the like is what it is.

OP comes up with more fanciful draft pick/prospect analysis than anyone I've ever seen. "Never see the field" the Eagles know his situation a lot better than any of us do. If you don't believe they've checked into the possibility of him being charged with anything major, you're kidding yourselves.

Mazi Smith was judged by everyone to be a late 1st round draft pick, at best. Jalen Carter was considered by some to be the best DT prospect in a decade.

Hargraves was all pro and one of the very best defensive tackles in the NFL. Carter is a downgrade.

They lost a guard, 2 LB, and both S. They replaced the guard and one of the S with decent draft picks. The other spots were replaced with replacement level contracts. Think all those 2 year deals Stephen has had us sign the last decade and the level of talent that comes of it.

From a talent standpoint they need their otehr 1st round pick to be an absolute HR and all the other picks need to hit to come close to breaking even talent wise.

We lost Zeke and replaced him with Vaughn.
Brown with Cooks.
Brown with Gilmore.
Schultz with Ferg and Schoon
Just add Mazi and Overshown to the mix.

Only thing I would disagree with it Carter is not replacing Hargraves. Jordan Davis was drafted to replace Hargraves. Carter was drafted to replace Cox. But Davis isn't going to be able to replace what Hargraves did as a pass rusher and we'll see if Carter can replace what Cox does/did.

Downgrading all 8 starters is overkilll. Although I will say for 2023 Carter probably represents a downgrade from Hargrave. However that could be irrelevant when you factor in development from Davis and Williams. Both their athleticism is otherworldly, and Davis ability to generate leverage could really offset Williams lack of length

Not sure where the 44" vertical came from, unless it was a typo. Here is a blurb right from Bruce Feldman's list....
"He close-grip benched 550 pounds. He vertical-jumps 33 inches. He broad-jumped 9-4 1/2. Smith, who had 37 tackles last season, has clocked a 4.41 shuttle time, which would’ve tied the best by any defensive tackle at this year’s NFL Scouting Combine"

That's from an attorney. Not me. So keep that in mind. I just happen to agree with the attorney. Because what he says checks out, if you look at it from a real-world perspective. He's getting a pass, because he played football, and this happened after a win. Deny that all you want; he's getting special treatment. And that is a risk, down the line, which is likely the real reason he was sluggish at workouts. He's scared. Like I said, the media just never picked this up, for whatever reason. That doesn't mean someone won't later. E for effort, I guess....

Then, there's the athleticism, and coaching, and players like Poe, who really weren't exciting coming out, but end up being a good player. So, I'm just comparing the pluses and minuses of the players. You can deduce whatever you want from that and apparently twist it however you want. I'm just stating facts with each prospect.
The date of that article you linked is Mar 2. Since then he's already had his first hearing (in late April) on misdemeanor charges.

He's not getting charged with a felony.

Was a typo on Feldman. He corrected himself iirc

They have pretty good depth on the interior. They have Milton Williams too who had 4 sacks in about 400 snaps last year. They can rotate alot of guys in and out

Have not read through all the posts yet. But Goodell should suspend him 6 games. But since he is an Eagles player, no such witch hunt will happen.

Hargraves averaged 5 sacks a year prior to coming to Philadelphia, I believe the pass rushing talent and the deep rotation helped him obtain career highs in sacks the last two seasons.

I believe he will be missed but not to the extreme many fans do. The talent drop off isn’t as severe as it appears.

Carter is a great replacement for Hargrave but definitely a down grade at this point. There is a reason Hargrave got a boat load of money. He is a great player.

Add losing both DC & OC doesn't help either. Could be surprised and the replacements may do well. Never know.
On paper they have less talent, but the potential to be better. However, I still feel drafting almost the entire Georgia defense from the past 2 years may not be wise.
But I do not pretend to be an NFL scout or know it all either. So I could be wrong on that as well. We will see in 2 to 3 years. Just my opinions.

We are assuming MM will be better than KM calling plays and scheme designs will be better.
But that won't take much to improve upon.

It is not fair for fans to put such hope in a rookie DT. This is not Aaron Donald. Most rookie DTs take a few years to season and reach their potential. If he turns into a Deron Payne or Jarran Reed, He will be a worthwhile pick.
