It might be a catch 22 with Mazi:

If he drops weight, he gets off the ball faster, but is robbed of his power.

Keep him at 330+ you retain his power but he is just too slow.

Pulling for the kid. I hope he fits Zimmers scheme and is able to help out in the trenches
I feel like the tenth of a second he might gain being lighter isn't as important as being able to hold his ground in the middle. He was supposed to be a lane clogged, not a pass rusher. Quinn really lost the script with this guy. Basically red shirted him. Hope he looks better this year.

Not putting a lot of stock in the accuracy of that roster. It also says Mazi Smith was acquired via free agency in 2023. One major inaccuracy begets another...

Same. I don’t know why this team is allergic to true 1 tech NTs — but for whatever reason, it’s a position we criminally undervalue

i think it's more Mental than it is Physical ... Quinn jut thought he could coach Mazi up and be fine . Totally got it wrong.

Now that will be Zimm and crew's new task now.

DQ valued lightweight DTs. Zim wants the big guys in there to stop the run. It's about time somebody started getting some size up there on the DL! I'm glad to see DQ gone.

He needs to be the path of most resistance for the Cowboys D-line. He needs to anchor his body and create traffic jams. His job is to literally take that 328 pounds and get in the way.

The whole theory of a wide body NT style D-lineman is that he clogs lanes, forcing RB's to deviate and gives more time for the LB's to search and destroy. The DE's can have the sacks and the LBers can have the tackles. Those big guys are graded differently.

Yup.

Plus Zimmer runs the AAgap scheme.

DTs are on the outside shoulder of the G.

That has to be the most confusing to me Dallas weighs their players every week to not know he was losing all that weight and let it happen Shame on them. If we needed a player to have a big jump in season 2 its Mazi. He was slow but he was pretty much able to hold his own during college. Baffles me to draft a Player that high and then try to mold him into something different. If he makes the jump Dallas will have a pretty good defense

Nothing about Mazi impressed last season. His supposed strength was his strength, but he was getting shoved around and he was slow off the snap, not sure adding more weight will will help that

I don't think they weigh the players every week. I think they weight them during camps and maybe during the bye week but aside from that unless a guy has a history of weight problems I don't think they bother with it. I honestly don't think he is as slow as he may have appeared as much as he was playing the read and react style he was used to at Michigan when Quinn wanted him to be more of an upfield player. Thing is, you really don't want your 1-tech getting too far upfield. His job is to hold the line at the point of attack and clog things up for the running game. Zimmer's defense feature's less of that 1-tech/3 tech anyway though. His is a two biguns in the A and B gaps and dare you to run style.
