There sure does seem to be a lot of not knowing what any given player can and cannot do well. Mazi is an example of that, but so was Conner Williams. Mazi is a 1 Tech DT and for some reason, we decided to slim him down into a 3 tech DT. We kept CW at his absolute worst position on the OL and refused to move him even though he was never a good fit at Guard. Miami moved him to center, like so many of us were asking for, and he suddenly bloomed into what is widely considered the 2nd best center in the NFL. Bell is a LB. Lewis is a boundary corner. LVE is a MLB. Sensing a pattern here?
If you are investing a first round pick he needs to be a plug and play type of player that can have an immediate impact.

If you’ve seen some of his explosive workout videos, you’ll know that he has quick twitch and amazing athletics for a huge man. At Michigan, he was trained to wait, read and react for years. I was told he would get in a game against good players and fall back on what he knew. It may take time to work that training out of him, but losing weight to become another 3-tech is just stupid, imo.
No player is ever trained to be slow off the snap. Read and react still requires you to be quick off the ball so you can get your hands on the inside and control the o-lineman and react to what they are trying to do. It’s read and react, not wait and react. If you wait, guys get on your body and you get blocked.
Mazi’s athleticism doesn’t translate. He’s slow off the ball which negates his quicknes. He doesn’t bring his feet which negates his power.
