McCarthy confirms Trey Lance to get bulk of work in preseason

The Cowboys' free agent strategy isn't based on how much they are paying the QB position. It was in place well before we drafted Dak and while we were paying him on his rookie deal.
I realize that, but having an extra 40-60 mpy could change our level of aggression.

It's time for Dak to prove his doesn't care about the money as much as he has in the past -- at least enough to reduce his salary enough to allow others to prosper, also. Perhaps we could even afford to pay for vet free agents above the 3rd tier level. Convey that desire to Todd France. ;)

Dak doesn’t care about money. He pays someone to do that for him. Dak Prescott is the best quarterback available to the Dallas Cowboys at this point in time. This Cowboys fans’ fantasy of Trey Lance becoming a better quarterback than Dak is funny. One thing for sure, no one will ever know how good a QB1 Lance can be until he is the QB1. He’ll have to show he’s better than Dak, now, to get the QB1 spot. Not potentially better, not needs actual game experience and he might develop. If he’s the guy he’ll have to prove it now or he’ll be watching Prescott play all season long. The likelihood is he’ll get injured in preseason and the Trey Lance silliness will finally be put to rest.

What's the real reason

1. See what they have in him as a backup
2. Showcase him off to other teams
3. Use this as a tool to not sign Dak?
4. See if he's the new starter whenever
All of the above should be the answer

I wonder what other teams and organizations give the bulk of the work to their 3rd string QB?

I wonder how this not only makes Dak, but Rush feel?

Why would Dak have any interest in resigning with the Cowboys at this point?

I wonder how this gets our first string offense in rhythm and ready to go for week 1?

Only in Jerry World.
Making something out of nothing. He is the only qb needing the majority of the preseason reps in our Dallas Cowboys

No, they don't. Practice is different from games. There are plenty of great practice players who perform poorly in actual games. He needs live action more than many players because he just hasn't been in much of it.
He has played.

2-2 career record.

Took the QB1 job from JimmyG.

They need him to take more game reps.

There’s a reason.

He’s warming up. 8)

LOL, are you seriously saying give the kid a chance??????????? I believe the 9ers exposed this kid for who he really is and that's a young man who should have stayed in college because at this point and time he does not have the skills or knowledge that plays well in the NFL. All this young man had to do with the 9ers was stay healthy, throw a few passes and don't mess thing up because he played on a team that had a dominating defense. BUT, because he couldn't stay healthy and he doesn't have the skills that plays well in the NFL the 9ers wasted little time and did the smart thing and fleeced JJ out of a valuable draft pick when no other team would even offer a lousy 7th rd pick for the kid. The Cowboys are far from being the QB whispers in the NFL, especially since they already have a QB that goes MIA in big games and they can't seem to fix him, so what makes everybody think they can make Lance into a real NFL QB when he's more like a starting practice squad QB at best!
He broke his leg.

They don’t want to pay Dak more mega millions. $$$

The 2024/2025 cap is jacked because of Daks contract.

Lance is going to replace Dak.

The number of snaps that he's had during games in college and the pros is miniscule. It can take years for a player to develop and he has around two years of snaps total as a starter. Playing before you develop can be disastrous. We kept Tony Romo on the bench for years while he developed as a QB. Most QBs with Lance's level of experience aren't taken in the first round. Then, because of injury and San Fran stumbling upon Purdy, he hasn't gotten much of a chance in the pros. He hasn't proven that he deserves more of a chance, but he's not going to do that sitting on a bench.

Why would only one of these apply? In the end the team has to see what Lance has and can do, and they can't define whether that is as a dud, a quality backup, trade bait or eventual starter until they get the chance to see more

It's doubtful since it hasn't changed previously. A lot of fans (not saying you are one of them) want to blame the lack of aggression on what the team is paying the QB position. That gives the front office an easy out. But the evidence shows that we haven't paid an outside free agent much of nothing since Brandon Carr. This is the team's strategy and I doubt that having a cheaper QB would change it since it hasn't before.

How did a $40 million per year contract to a quarterback create a “jacked” salary cap situation when many other teams pay their quarterback substantially more and their cap situation is not “jacked”. What did the Cowboys do to get into this “jacked” situation while paying their quarterback a comparatively reasonable amount? What have they done and who in the front office is responsible for handcuffing the team financially?

Cowboyszone is home to the extremes. Trey Lance is either:
  • Tranced
or
  • The next coming of Troy Aikman/Roger Staubach
Poor kid.

Yeah no it's just a weak, conservative philosophy. The Eagles have 300 million in void money on the books and they still make moves and push it. We approach the off season like scared little girls.
