Does beating the Eagles lock Mike McCarthy's job security for 2023 or could a first-round playoff exit still lead to his firing? It's setting up for the Cowboys to have a favorable wild card game. They will be favored on the road.
Jerry is not paying a head coach money to stay home that led his team to two straight playoffs unless he disrespected Jones to the media. Stop listening to the idiot ex football players on ESPN that like to say dumb things to keep their jobs.

I don't see Jerry canning him. He has had a successful season this year. These players are playing for him, he has assembled a good staff and team. The character of the team has changed significantly from the Jason Garrett days.

if the Cowboys don’t at least make it to NFCCG I’m going all in for Payton

Payton went to three NFC title games in 15 years with a HOF QB. One SB win. No postseason in 6 of those years.

MM went to four NFC title games in 13 years with HOF QB's. One SB win. Missed the postseason in 4 of those years.

Not seeing a huge difference between the two.

The Cowboys must go beyond their playoff results over the past 25 seasons. Only some special circumstances would prevent McCarthy from being fired if this is not achieved.

After all, either the HC or the GM or both will be blamed for the lack of success. Since it's the owner who gets to decide who is to blame and since the owner is the GM, what is the natural conclusion?
I agree, but with jerry we just dont know what he will do lol.

I think mike is acting like he is coaching for his job this season, and I guess he wants a 10 year run here like in GB.
he wants to win a SB and then coast for the rest of the years and get massages and collect that heavy trunk of cash each month.

I think he needs to win in div round , but with jerry not telling.
and it could go another way , mike may get to champ game and lose, and then jerry fires him ! or get to SB and then get fired! who knows.

I really appreciate the various opinions on this topic. It's pretty obvious that the regular season does not matter to some of you. For you individuals, it's the postseason where you measure the worth of our head coach. For others of you, the actions of our head coach to navigate adversity are valued and so just getting this team to the playoffs despite losing our QB for several early season games has earned him another year as our HC. I certainly see more eye to eye with that perspective. This season could have easily fallen apart early but Mike kept this team believing in itself. I think he is a candidate for coach of the year. Playoffs are clinched, and a favorable match in the wildcard round seems to be in the cards.

..I think, it helped. But sure telling, will be playoffs.
I agree
He has to win a couple games in playoffs
But those thinking Payton would be the guy if he’s fired don’t know Jerry. The next HC is on the staff if Jerry did make a move
I know many hate McCarthy but they should see that Jerry loves his OC and DC and they aren’t going anywhere unless it’s to be a HC somewhere
Changing HC jeans changing them and I don’t see Jerry doing that

If the Cowboys lose a close game to either the Eagles or 49ers than McCarthy's job is likely safe. If they lose to anyone else or get blown out by either team then I would expect McCarthy is gone because he has to be.

I agree. there are a lot of opinions and I think the context has to do with the level of expectation and how fair and realistic fans are willing to be.

It's all fine and wonderful to hold high lofty standards based on some historic entitlement, but what is fair? What is realistic?

How in the world can you fire a HC with back to back double digit wins when they are the best regular season results in the past 25 years?

If all NFL fan's only standard is SB champion or unemployment, then every season 31 of the 32 teams would be looking for a new HC.

I would set the criteria at getting into the playoffs consistently. If they are in the playoffs almost every season then probability dictates that the Cowboys win a share of championships.

Whatever McCarthy is doing, the Cowboys have been given back to back opportunities and that is all we can realistically hope for.

Would have to a totally embarrassing collapse to get MM fired. He's got a great record and the team is capable of beating anyone. He's got his warts, sure, but Garrett was the definition of mediocrity and got 10 years

The expectation of some of the fans in more recent times is crazy in my opinion. After having a home playoff game last year and underperforming, having a million penalties, not being ready to play.

Anything less than an NFC title game this year McCarthy is gone. I'm sick of the mediocrity. This team either performs when it counts or doesn't.

We've seen a half dozen coaching changes since the last NFCCG appearance. If the Cowboys fall short again I'm confident a seventh coaching change is the answer.

That has to be the problem, right? :muttley:

The difference is Payton was at one of the biggest losing franchises in NFL history in New Orleans. While McCarthy was at “titletown”

McCarthy’s future will probably be determined in the playoffs. However- I don’t believe for one second that Sean Payton is the next HC here. He’s used to having a level of authority over a team in ways that Jerry won’t allow. Besides, Payton’s resume’ is basically McCarthy’s resume’.

Barring Jimmy Johnson suddenly de-aging 30 years, there is no Coach I think is worth several first round draft picks or whatever number the Saints were throwing around. There are teams that did it and won, but I just cringe at anything resembling our infamous WR trades.

"Titletown", also known as the last place any free agent wants to sign - Green Bay, Wisconsin. In this era of football, New Orleans is a more attractive option.
