This is what I think is the least recognized aspect to coaching.
Coach Smith instructs his players how to win the individual battles they will face during a game. Some of that requires the player to get to a spot to complete their duty on a specific play. Be it a blocker, or a WR, or a defender, they have a spot, at times, to man and execute to win the battle.
What if:
The player forgets his assignment?
The player isn't smart enough to complete his assignment?
The player isn't talented enough to win his assigned battle?
The fans start threads like this and have been starting threads like this since the early 2000's. They blame the coach because they have not been in the meetings, seen the assignments, watched the player in practice and determined if the problem is the player and not the coach.
This is the VERY SAME debate fans on this site have about Dak.
Do the fans know:
If the player ran the correct route?
Did the player get out of control and fall down?
The player missed his block because he was late to the cut-off point and the QB is harassed off his throwing spot, or the blocker has to hold to prevent a sack.
The player is a mass of muscles with the intellect of a gnat and cannot comprehend the scheme.
The player on the other team is much better at their job than the player on this team.
And in some cases, NOT ALL CASES, a pick occurs that was brought on by surrounding players and not the passer.
Or a two yards and a cloud of dust occurs because the ball carrier read the wrong opening and cut into the defender.
And this happens on every team.
McCarthy took a team with the starting QB out, and a journeyman QB, and won four out of five games to salvage the season until the starter could come back. Facing adversity, McCarthy has kept the team focused and they rebound. It appears they are headed to the play-offs.
The idea fans seem to imply with their commentary is making the play-offs is easy. (There will be push back on this comment where people will say, "I never said getting to the play-offs is easy." But look at this. And I number myself in this category. Dak went down and Dallas lost the first game. The suicide watch was in DefCon 1. I, myself wrote a treatise which essentially gave up on the season. This board was foaming at the mouth, bat shart crazy. So don't think your negativity doesn't encompass the idea that the team should make the play-offs every year. Or, why is it people say the real season doesn't start until the tourney?)
We watch the Red-Headed Mistake reveal it ain't a walk in the park.
Each game has a turning point. The Green Bay game turned because of Rodgers. The Jaguars game turned because the defense they played, played better in the second half. That happens.
McCarthy will not be fired, unless Jones just craps the bed and has to have a name brand head coach in Payton. Because of ratings and ego.
And in the big scheme of things, Payton is not a better coach than McCarthy. They are similar and like all head coaches are dependent on their players to execute.
