McCarthy: Nobody wants to be on a one-year contract

It's not just the effect on MM, but the whole team, It seems to undermine, whatever authority MM does have. When the coach looks like he has one foot out the door and head scratching decisions by the FO, how motivated will some of these players be? For those players under contract, it seems the plan should be just try to avoid injury and play well enough not to get cut until next season and a new coach and effort to try to win is shown by the FO.

This is why I have said a successful season doesn't guarantee MM will return with a new contract. You can tell by the tone here, that he doesn't appreciate Jerry putting him and his family in this position. I can see him telling Jerry to shovel it if another offers a job ( Bucs, Bengals, Bills etc. ). Many fans are disappointed but his resume during his time here on the open market is pretty impressive.

I think coaches and players understand the business of football better than anyone. I don't believe McCarthy will be mad at the Joneses and not take a new deal if offered. He understands that this is a prove-it league or you don't have a job.

This is so true ..........how can you expect players to trust their coach when you don't?

MM is a good coach not a great one. Fact is there are few great coaches at any time. Now I think that there are better coaches in the NFL then MM but not many and the odds of getting one here are pretty slim. Jethro hated every minute BP was coach because in the terms of the agreement it was BP in control. I really believe he will NEVER give any other HC that control again. And I do not see any coaches better than MM willing to come here without the same authority that BP had.

Wouldn’t that be something if he earned a contract and walked on Jerry.
It wouldn’t happen. What NFL coach has ever done that? Coaching the Cowboys is a dream job. McCarthy is lucky to still have it after the debacle in the playoffs and he knows it.

Sure and the rub likely is not money as much as it is years. Cowboys want to sign them to 5+ years and they want 4 years so they can cash in again like he who is not to be named is doing now.

3 straight seasons with lackluster performances in the post season will do that. If he had any type of success in the playoffs he would have gotten extended already. That's how this league works.
It was the complaint with GB, too. Rodgers thought he was holding them back in the playoffs.

Should have been fired two years ago, let alone last year, he has been a total failure so far as a HC. I only hope he takes the QB with him where ever he goes.

Props to Mike McCarthy for voicing some form of criticism about Jerry Jones, regardless whether it was said between the lines or on behalf of another coach or player than himself. The opportunity (and responsibility) of inquiring about any sort of questionable general manager decisions should be that of the media.

If anything, the media should latch onto McCarthy's public soundbite and began continuously peppering Jones about his stance on one-year contracts. Allow Jones the chance of conveying his rationalization behind any particular one-year contract he has endorsed. That should be a fun listen.

This whole off season seems like that, the Owner has done next to nothing to improve the roster, lame duck coaches, publicly telling the media that your three best players still need to prove something before getting new deals, they don't seem serious about making a playoff run, why put your body on the line? I wouldn't be surprised to see players, not in a contract year, making business decisions on the field.

I'm not surprised to hear Zach talking about possible retirement, he can see it's shaping up to be a long season, lame duck coaches and a lame duck season, just saps that motivation.

I feel like this is going to cause us to have a bad season. More than the roster losing talent. I feel if Jerry wants to blow it up after this season then just do it now. If there is no plan to blow it up then make some changes to the contracts. In this thread I’m not advocating one way or the other but I’m concerned with the idea of “let’s see what happens in 2024 then make decisions “ is dysfunctional and can cause a toxic environment. That dysfunctional, high anxiety environment might tank 2024 for us even if our talent isn’t bad. If we start out slow this environment could derail the season IMO. I don’t feel our FO is being smart with not being transparent.
I feel exactly the opposite. They will have an outstanding season.

Mike can go back into his barn in Green Bay and study analytics for 5-10 years for all I care. He lost me at the Seattle game.
