With the new additions McFadden better not have anymore hamstring issues or any other injury issues that keep him off the practice field and out of preseason games or he might not make the team. The Cowboys won't keep him around if he can't be depended on. If some of these other backs take advantage of the opportunity they're being given and shine and McFadden is still being bothered by his hammy it's going to bye-bye!

I don't agree.

If he is not a shot out of the gate I don't see the cowboys dumping him.

I think he is here for the ride. The cowboys will try and get him going.

I don't see them bailing on him right away...

Come mid season... Who knows what we need... Who knows what he can do,..

If he misses any more time, he doesn't deserve to stay on this roster.

This is a championship contending football team, not a rest home.

The most important ability is availability. Can't make the club in the tub. And there's no better example of it in recent memory than this guy.

I don't want to speak for Alexander as he is capable enough. However my feeling is that the answer to your question is No One...and the reason for that answer is because Alexander would have already addressed this position and we wouldn't need to fill a void in August.

Now don't get me wrong the Cowboys did address the position. By bringing in McFadden and promoting Randle to starter.

That's practically nothing.

I don't believe it's that cut and dry.

We'll see!

I just hope McFadden can show half of what he did in college. If he can the Cowboys have a RB.

Man, I am really relieved you are not our GM. I mean, who would you go get that is out there right now, that isn't camp fodder.
What is your plan, maybe you can have a meeting with the other internet GMs and come up with a solution.

Agreed. Plans are not developed during TC. The fact that we are well into TC and our RB situation is still a question mark has to be a concern considering what the running game meant to our team last season.

I just can't wait until the next preseason game. I really want to see Randle and McFadden behind our first string OL.

It may not be, but I personally feel it should be. A guy with a poor injury history has already had two periods of unavailability with no contact. I would not depend in him during such an important season.

Any more unavailability and I'd say goodbye.

I hear ya...

For me, I just wouldn't go on the "I personally feel" approach with him. I'm gonna throw him against the wall a few times.... Maybe one time he sticks?

I, for one, am stunned to hear that Stasheroo thinks we should cut McFadden. Why hadn't I heard of this earlier?

Cowboys running backs McFadden, Dunbar returning to practice

The Cowboys will be missing Gus Johnson for at least the next few days as he copes with a shoulder injury, so it makes sense that they were working out running backs on Saturday morning.

On the whole, though, the running back position in Oxnard, Calif., looked much better for the Cowboys as they went through their walkthrough practice. As the offense jogged through reps, they were joined by Darren McFadden -€“ for the first time this summer -€“ and Lance Dunbar.

"It was good to see of those guys out there getting a little work, try to ease each of them back into practice today," said Cowboys coach Jason Garrett. "So we'll still be a little bit short handed, but hopefully they'll get some work and start getting back on the road to getting some reps to help our team win ball games."...

I'm betting 'Gus the Bus' will be retained until such time as he's needed, whether it's on the live roster or the practice squad. I thought he made a pretty fair showing for a rookie with such a short period of time to become acquainted with the subtleties of the Cowboys offense.

Of course, it's also entirely possible that yet another RB might be obtained in the event both McFadden and Gus fail to impress sufficiently in the weeks that remain 'til the regular season begins. There will most assuredly be other players to become available in the days that lie ahead. I can readily picture Will McClay burning the midnight oil while weighing his options.

I don't see him here for the ride if he's not healthy by the start of the season or it could end up being a bumpy ride for him and the team. The contract the Cowboys signed McFadden to which is mostly incentive based says they're not banking on him so if he's still being hampered by his hamstring when the final cuts come and one of these other backs step up McFadden could very well end up being released. If you look into his lengthy injury history when he's had hamstring issues they keep reoccurring. In 2010 he missed 5 games with a hamstring issue. In 2013 he suffered a strained hamstring and tried playing with it but wasn't effective. He aggravated it in week 9 and had to be shut down the rest of the season. He's missed at least 12 full games over his career due to hamstring problems and don't think the Cowboys aren't aware of it. He started having hamstring issues in June causing him to miss valuable OTA work and his other hamstring kept him out of the first 2 weeks of training camp.

During yesterdays PC Garrett sounded a little frustrated saying McFadden hasn't practiced much with the team since he signed due to his hamstring. If McFadden appears to still be hampered by his hamstring limiting his effectiveness and one of these other new backs steps up and impresses the Cowboys are going to have to make a tough decision. If come the final cuts he's still not right the Cowboys are going to have to move on without him because based on his history with hamstrings this is something that could linger all season causing him to miss games. If the Cowboys are going to have an effective, consistent running game they need a rotation with some healthy backs.

The team can't afford to go into the season with an injured back taking up a roster spot. McFadden is going to have to show he can do something now because he's only averaged 3.3 a carry the past 3 seasons which is the second lowest in the league over that period. The Cowboys can't put themselves in a situation where they're having to cut him during the season and bring in a back off the streets. McFadden is going to have to show the next few weeks that the hamstring issues he's had this summer are behind him and that he can run effectively if he's going to make the team.

if I have it counted right there are about 12 more practices before roster cut down to 53 with preseason games and days off.

Ben Malena is a good blitz blocker. So start with McFadden, and if he gets hurt cut him immediately can call up Ben from the practice squad. Or get someone else, hehe
