McFadden vs Morris

"Here are the numbers for you to do with what you like: In 2015, Darren McFadden was given the ball 183 times on zone running plays and racked up 668 yards. This averages out to 3.65 yards per carry on a team that generally gets 5 yards a carry on these plays. On the old man-blocking plays with pulling guards and such, he ran 56 times for 442 yards for a whopping 7.89 yards per carry. So, the scheme the Cowboys run was half as productive as the scheme McFadden fits the best."

The Cowboys had to alter their running scheme for McFadden last year. He has always had trouble running in a zone blocking system. So how would he be the most complete back in a system where he is the only back that does not excel in it? Why keep one back that needs a different system than the rest of your team to be successful? Are you going to have the offensive line run two systems that change depending upon which back is in the game? Short answer. You Wouldn't.

This.

He averaged 4.6 YPC last year when the vast majority of his runs were on ZBS, so we shouldn't act like he was bringing the run game to a screeching halt. Again, add into the fact he did not have the luxury of competent QB play with Romo out last year and I think it's safe to say he'd be even more effective and his production would have increased with Romo. He's complete in that he's a proven pass protector as a RB and can catch the ball out of the backfield. I know folks are getting excited because they see Morris catch a lofted screen pass but McFadden is proven receiver out of the backfield.

Here are some key stats that I think everyone should take a look at.

Despite McFadden coming into the league in 2008, because of his injury history he has a total of 1277 carries. Alfred Morris has 1078.

McFadden has 45 runs of 20 yards or more and 11 of 40 yards or more. Morris has 32 and 2 respectively.

I'm sure people are ready to say that McFadden is the way to get because of the speed burst he has over Morris... Let me ask you to hold off for a moment.

We establish that McFadden has 199 carries more than Morris. Well, Morris has 220 first downs to McFadden's 226. He has just as many first downs with about 200 carries less than McFadden... He also has 29 touchdowns to McFadden's 28.

Morris has a career average of 4.4 yards per carry whereas McFadden has a 4.2.

Imagine how much these numbers shift if you take out the 239 carries that McFadden had behind the Cowboy offensive line... That takes away 52 first downs.

I would say that the slight burst advantage that McFadden gives you isn't anywhere near valuable enough to play him over Morris.

Where I will tip my hat to McFadden is that he is a more well-rounded running back than Morris. He can catch out of the backfield. He is a threat in space. The problem here is that I think you have a much more viable threat in space with Dunbar than McFadden.

Ultimately, I don't see McFadden having a spot on this team.

Morris is a bruiser and is a better change of pace back than Mcfadden to compliment Elliotts skill set. However, Mcfadden is probably the better all around back especially on 3rd down.

I'm a McFadden fan and I was happy for him last year. But he's not playing and Morris is taking advantage of it. He looks really good behind that offensive line. He deserves the roster spot.

I dont either. McFadden is a more well rounded back, but he isnt suited to our strengths. We can play a man blocking scheme rather effectively, but we are at our absolute best in a zone blocking scheme

I think that a person who's incurred injuries can be a little less bold than a guy who hasn't. Morris is fearless out there. Take a look at Romo before injury/after injury. I had a hamstring injury back in the 90s, and after that, I was never the same, mentally. Just an observation that could be wrong.;)

McFadden is Barry Switzer.........JJ and SJ wanted to prove that anyone could run behind the OL "they" built... they didn't want to pay Murray so they called up DMC as Plan B behind Randle.....he did what Switzer did and superficially accomplished something but in reality it was hollow....at least they recognized their mistake and the potential for greatness with EE and this OL and made the pick

and just like Ol Barry, DAL needs to change the locks on the door and bid McFadden adieu

Wait, wait.....

It was posted above that with all things being equal, McFadden ran for twice as many yards per carry in a man scheme than he did in the zone scheme. So doesn't that mean that the best thing we do is run in a man scheme? Almost 8 yards a carry is better than anything any back has ever done in Dallas.

I will go on record that none of our backs will average anywhere close to 8 yds a carry running the ball in zone.

Can't argue with stats.

What an incredibly stupefying theory trying to be passed off as fact.

That would work if we played all season against teams second units in games we were trying to lose....we were down 24-0 against WAS's JV but McFadden got his yards and 300k bonus

I am not expressing my opinions or will try not to any more on this subject . It's all moot anyways.
 At the 500 more threads over the next few weeks.
