Mel Kiper sees Todd Gurley as Cowboys best 'fit'

Well, who wouldn't like to have Gurley -- the problem is that it's extremely likely he'll be chosen by pick #27.
I would imagine Kiper would be aware of our chances being slim. Saying he's our best fit and actually getting him are two entirely different propositions. In any case, we should resolve a RB need one way or the other.

Getting the Number One players at a position is a great thing to do. If we can get Gurley or Gordon, I'm fine with that, as they are nearly interchangeable in talent.

I like Gurley more. Gordon suffers from my bias about Wisconsin backs. They just seem to churn them out. It is not logical or fair, but I cannot shake that.

It's a fair bias. None have amounted to jack. Look at Montee Ball. I thought he would be a stud.

I just think Gordon is different, and is a perfect fit for our scheme.

I agree but he has some real mileage on those wheels

That plays into my preference too. That and the fact that I watched Gurley absolutely destroy my Gamecocks defense in person two years in a row.

Imo the difference between Gurley and Gordon is almost as much as the difference between Gordon and Ajayi. Gurley is his own tier.

Ajayi will be the best back in the draft

He's in my Jerry pronunciation mock.

Rd 1-Owamagbe Odighizuwa
Rd 2-Jay Ajayi
Rd 3- Cedric Ogbuehi
Rd 4- Ifo Ekpre-Olomu
Rd 5-Rakeem Nunez-Roches
Rd 7A-Louis Trinca-Pasat
Rd 7B-Miles Dieffenbach

Imagine the press conference this would be! Jerry might have a stroke trying to pronounce those.
:lmao:

That he took the time to make the mention leads me to think that he's hearing he won't be drafted in the first. Given the recent history of teams not drafting RBs in the first, and Gurley's injury, it could very well be that he falls.

That said, I absolutely do not get the obsession with Gurley, or the claim that he is the best in the draft. His general lack of production over his college career is what scares me. You have to PROJECT that he will be elite. He certainly hasn't proven that he's elite over a long period of time.

Best fit would be DT Malcolm Brown. He's the perfect 1 tech for us who can still play on third downs and shift over to 3 tech when we want to mix it up. Nobody should feel comfortable with what we have at 1 tech right now.

If that's the case, he's certainly got scads of draft gurus and experts thinking otherwise. He had 3285 yards, 36 touchdowns and averaged 6.4 yards per carry during three seasons, despite a season-ending injury and a four-game suspension. Add 615 receiving yards and two TDs on kickoff returns. That just seems a pretty impressive accounting of himself to me, all things considered. I imagine his average yards per carry during limited action probably had much to do with his reputation. Most of the mocks have him going in the mid-first round, so it should be interesting to see whether the pro teams think yea or nay in that regard.

To be fair, I have seen quite a few draft websites put Gordon ahead of Gurley, I think draftbreakdown also has Coleman ahead of Gurley. Part of that is risk versus reward with the whole injury/suspension thing, but some of it is just the fact that Gordon has an elite skill set as well. So many are saying that Gurley is by far the best RB in the draft, but to me it is pretty close.

I can't project Gordon because of his Wisconsin ties.

If he is the real deal then I will actually take him over Gurley all things =.

Im just afraid that its more Wisconsin RB fools gold.

Everyone said that about Penn State RB's though until Larry Johnson tore up the league for 4 or 5 years.

I think those votes for Gordon over Gurley are largely due to Gurley's knee injury entering into consideration.
Gordon has considerable work to do in the areas of blocking and receiving/route running in comparison. If it weren't for Gurley's questionable status in terms of his readiness to return to the field, it wouldn't be so close.

It's hard to say what the pro teams are likely to do on draft day, though. It only takes one team to be high on either player to make the difference between one or the other being drafted first. No doubt, both are coveted.

Gotta say, I also have great admiration for Coleman. It's been said he's arguably the most complete player in the upcoming draft. He'll hit top speed in the blink of an eye, which is a rare and valuable trait to have.
