Merriman leaves strong impression as Chargers rookie
By Skip Wood, USA TODAY
SAN DIEGO — Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Trent Green gets knocked down hard to the ground.
Bam! There he goes again.

Then it's Chiefs running back Priest Holmes' turn — and down he stays for a minute or so.

For San Diego Chargers rookie linebacker Shawne Merriman, the team's No. 1 pick (12th overall), Sunday's much-needed AFC West win also represented a welcome dose of self-validation.

Despite solid play the last few games, Merriman believed he needed to do more, both to help his team and regain a certain feeling of reckless empowerment he hadn't really felt since the season before at Maryland.

So when the day was done, when he had the two sacks and several other play-wrecking rushes, Merriman was as happy as he was relieved.

"Whenever you're a top draft pick, you have to come out and make plays," he said shortly after the 28-20 win that keeps 4-4 San Diego in the division hunt. "I mean, that's what they got you in for, that's why you go early."

Not since Chris Mims had three sacks in 1992 had a Chargers rookie recorded at least two.

Merriman's pass-rushing pressure appears to be becoming a staple of the San Diego defense after he was unable to contribute much the first month of the season because of a sore knee.

But his first career sack resulted in a fumble by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He forced an interception from the Oakland Raiders' Kerry Collins. He had a sack against the Philadelphia Eagles.

And then came his performance this past weekend.

Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer enjoys watching Merriman's flower slowly bloom.

"He's making really good progress. He's a very bright young man," Schottenheimer said. "I had a discussion with him the other day, asking him about a blocking scheme. I put it up and asked him who blocks him in a certain play, and right away he knew who blocked him. ...

"He has size, he has speed and he has a relentless nature about him, and those qualities make terrific defensive players."

Merriman also has fellow rookie Luis Castillo on his unit, a lineman taken with the 28th pick who has been effective at end. He picked up his first career sack against the Chiefs and contributed to another.

"Castillo comes out every week and just plays. He has a motor that never stops," Merriman said. "Him and the rest of our D-line just provides a great tempo for us."

For his part, Castillo shares Merriman's sense of responsibility.

"I think we made our statement today," Castillo said. "It's something where we are both starting and getting the opportunity to get into games and make big plays when it counts. That's what we live for."

CrazyCowboys still likes Ware better....but in all fairness I like all Cowboy players the best!

That must have been a very tough call on Ware or Merriman. Both great Hybrids.

I'm thinking that is was the agents (and not the players themselves) that may have been the final piece of straw that set the scales in motion.

If that were the case then Dat wouldve been to the probowl for the past three years. Sorry but sacks >>> all in ROY voting get that through your head.

I never argued that sacks aren't the most influential statistic for ROTY, but usually it takes 12 or more to get the honor. If Thurman ends up with five or more interceptions, almost 100 tackles and a couple of sacks and Ware ends up with less than 10 sacks, then Thurman will get the award. Right now, that looks like where they are headed, but anything could happen at this point.

Also, what's the purpose of bringing up the Pro Bowl in this discussion. The criteria for making it is on a different scale than ROTY.

One note, though, on the "greater" statistic. If Ware ended up with 12 sacks and Thurman ended up with 12 interceptions, which do you think would get ROTY? Obviously on an equal basis, sacks are not greater than all, but it is more likely for a rookie to get 12-plus sacks than it is for one to get 12-plus ints.

It is very, very rare for a LB to have more than 6 Ints.

Ware/Merriman/Thurman are the race.

I think Ware is a tad smaller and more a pure pash rusher than Merriman. ALA The Lt Comparisons.

Merriman is a bigger guy more ready and able to step in and impact. More DE/LB size. Both hybrids.

Time will tell who is "more" right. Hope both work out.

9. Cowboys OLB DeMarcus Ware
Season stats (eight games): 24 tackles, four sacks, pass defended
Week Eight stats: two tackles
Last week’s ranking: 8
Stock: SLIPPING

If he’s not careful, Chargers OLB Shawne Merriman is going to pass Ware up.

Parcells looked at, tested, measured, examined, interviewed, researched and investigated both Merriman and Ware. He made his vote which one was better for our system.

Some of you disagree.

Guess whose opinion I am going to go with on this one?

Ware has one move and is weak. He is only getting by with talent. Merriman, has arms the size of quads, hes fast, and uses a plethera[sp] of moves. To say Ware is better at this time would be biased. Again, im not saying who will be better later. Have you watched Merriman play yet?

Man Merriman has been playing better lately but to say that Ware has one move is BS, Merriman hasnt shown many moves that Ware hasnt done but he is much more explosive then Ware but it might be that he only got in the game in situations before the Chiefs games.
